Meet D. L. Armillei

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful D. L. Armillei. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with D. L. below.

D. L. , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Finding my purpose as a writer has been a deeply personal journey, one that involves a mix of introspection, exploration, and inspiration. Understanding what excites me the most was the first step. The inspiration for my flagship series, Anchoress, came during an energy healing session. The story was downloaded into my consciousness as I had a vision of a teenage female warrior. She had obviously gone through a lot of challenges and trials, and instead of crumbling, she conquered them and emerged stronger than ever. This inspiring figure captivated me, and I had to know her story. From there, I built the entire Anchoress series.

So, why do I write? For me, it’s a blend of reasons: to entertain, educate, inspire, and provoke thought. I want to inspire my readers with stories of resilience and strength, much like the heroine of Anchoress. My story ideas come from various sources: watching news and current events on YouTube, reading a diverse range of books from science and economics to all types of fiction, and observing people around me. These experiences help shape my unique voice and the stories I tell.

Experimenting with various forms of writing has helped me find what resonates most with me. I’ve learned not to be afraid to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. This exploration has been crucial in finding my true purpose as a writer. Sharing my work with others and listening to their feedback has provided invaluable insights. Engaging with a community of writers offers support, inspiration, and constructive criticism, helping me grow and refine my purpose.

Setting short-term and long-term goals for my writing and regularly reflecting on my progress helps ensure that my work aligns with my sense of purpose. I’ve learned that my purpose as an author might evolve over time. I stay open to new ideas and directions, allowing myself the freedom to change and grow as both a person and a writer. Attending writing workshops, conferences, and events further enhances my understanding and commitment to my craft.

By continually exploring these aspects, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of my purpose as a writer and create work that is meaningful both to me and to my readers. For me, the journey has been profoundly fulfilling, from the vision of a teenage warrior to crafting stories inspired by everyday observations. Finding my purpose as a writer has been a journey well worth undertaking.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m focused on finishing the last four books in my Anchoress series and then focusing on getting them made into films, perhaps on a streaming service like Netflix. I’m excited to launch book four in this series next year. To further connect with my readers and expand the Anchoress community, I plan to create a YouTube channel, Facebook group, and Instagram account dedicated to the series. There is so much to unpack in these books. It’s a series that can be read again and again, uncovering more connections and getting more out of it each time.

In terms of my personal brand, I’ve decided to embrace who I am: a lover of writing, a fantasy fan, a sci-fi geek, and a vegan. I’m particularly passionate about raw veganism and juicing right now and the many benefits this lifestyle brings. Adopting a vegan lifestyle not only promotes better health through a plant-based diet but also gives back by protecting the environment and standing against animal cruelty. Through my writing and my lifestyle, I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions and explore new ways of living.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my writing journey were perseverance, creativity, and a willingness to learn. Perseverance helped me push through challenges and setbacks, keeping me focused on my long-term goals. Creativity allowed me to explore new ideas and perspectives, fueling my passion for storytelling and helping me craft unique narratives. A willingness to learn was crucial in continually improving my craft, staying open to feedback, and embracing new techniques and technologies.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to stay committed to your goals and never give up, no matter how tough things get. Cultivate your creativity by experimenting with different styles and genres, and let your imagination run free. Finally, always be open to learning – seek out opportunities for growth, whether through workshops, reading, or connecting with other writers. Embrace feedback and use it to refine your skills. By focusing on these qualities, you can build a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling journey.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The books that played an important role in my development was the Harry Potter series. Watching interviews with J.K. Rowling and hearing about her struggles inspired me to believe that I could write too. I was particularly moved when I saw a news story about a young child who had survived Hurricane Katrina and had nothing left of her house and personal possessions except her Harry Potter books. She said reading those books got her through the ordeal of the hurricane and its terrible aftermath. This story touched me deeply and made me realize the profound impact a book can have on someone’s life.

Inspired by this, I wanted to reach people in the same way, touching the lives of others in a positive and inspiring manner. That little girl on TV taught me that stories have the power to provide comfort, hope, and escape during difficult times. It reinforced my belief in the importance of writing and fueled my desire to create stories that could offer solace and inspiration to readers facing their own challenges.
