Meet Alexis Rongo

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Rongo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alexis, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?

I overcame burnout by going back to what my childhood self loved to do. I stopped putting so much pressure on myself and went back to reading, playing video games, and just creating for myself. This also led me to find my love for writing again and I’ve started to realize that being a novelist is still what I want to do.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Currently, I’m focusing on writing my first novel. Down the line, I’m choosing to do traditional publishing for my books. This novel is going to be a contemporary romance and so far, I’m really loving the idea and how it’s playing out. I also have plans to write fantasy as well.

Writing is something I loved to do in junior high and high school but I gave it up when the imposter syndrome set it and I could never get over the bouts of writer’s block.

Now, as an adult, that I’ve found my way back to it, it’s given me a renewed sense of appreciation for the art and I have to say, nothing else that I’ve done so far has felt this right, career-wise. I truly feel like this is what I’m meant to be doing and to realize that after so many years is indescribable.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think the top three skills that have really helped me the most are time management, keeping deadlines/schedules and basically anything to do with structure. Also daily goals.

If you’re like me and are an artist with ADHD, keeping your own schedule and having daily goals is key. I recommend keeping a calendar in whatever format works for you. For me, I just like to use my phone’s because it’s always with me, but I used to have an iPad as well, and that was also very useful.

Just remembering to have the discipline to achieve your goals is everything, especially if you’re in a field like me, where all of the work is front-facing. Meaning, I’m a writer, so I have to do a lot of work up front to get the results I want.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

WRITER’S BLOCK. It’s insane for me right now because I have a day job, I’m planning trips and also working on multiple projects, so my schedule is all over the place.

Currently, I’m just trying to take my own advice with keeping a calendar, setting daily goals and trying to write a little bit every day. If I don’t hit my daily writing goal, I try not to beat myself up too much about it but I also know that if I procrastinate too much, I’ll feel very guilty about it. So I’m just trying to be gentle with myself and remind myself why I’m doing this.

For me, I know that to the core of my being, writing is what I’m meant to be doing. Storytelling is everything to me and I have big dreams.
