We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Lamar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Being the youngest of four, I saw some good and not so good examples ahead of me. However, I always felt like I had to prove myself and make a name for myself. I say make a name for myself because I was always known to be the “little brother”. The “little brother to me felt like a shadow of someone else. Making a name for myself and finding myself did not come easy; mainly because I had no idea what I wanted to do. Overtime, I learned that being the “little brother/shadow” allowed me to take back seat in a lot of situations and observe what was going on around me. With that being said, my work ethic, I would say, came from being the “little brother/shadow”. This is what made me the man I am today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a Financial Advisor, I work with a lot of wealthy individuals and families to help them plan for their future. This can be planning for goals, education, retirement, taxes as well as legacy planning. Although most of my clients are massively successful, I enjoy helping the less fortunate understand how finances really work. In the black community, finances are not talked about at our dinner tables, so to be able to help all is my biggest passion. Whatever your income level may be, I invite you to meet with me and team so we can help you make your dreams come to fruition.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first quality is getting out of the known to be comfort zone. Being one of the only few BLACK men in the financial planning industry, there were a lot of times where I had to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. In most cases, I am still having to step outside of my comfort zone. The second quality is continuing to strive to be the best version of yourself. Often times we can become satisfied with where we are in life because of how far we have come, but we all have to understand that there is always more in us. One of the last of many qualities is giving yourself the mental flowers that you deserve. As individuals we have to be hard on ourselves more than anyone else is on us; however, don’t forget to give yourself the credit you deserve. These qualities will allow you to give YOU the permission to be successful.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Personal development is my current challenge. Being the best version of myself is always on the top of my mind. Being the best version of myself will allow me to be better for others.
