Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Allison Herman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Allison, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I find inspiration everywhere! From current runway trends and street style to people-watching, historical eras, vintage clothing, and traveling to experience other cultures. Keeping my creativity alive involves staying curious, exploring diverse influences, and continuously seeking out new experiences that fuel my imagination.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner and CEO of Dragonwing, a vibrant and dynamic girls’ activewear and apparel brand. We are at the forefront of empowering young girls to express themselves confidently and comfortably through high-quality, stylish, and functional clothing. Our mission goes beyond fashion; it’s about fostering a community where girls can feel strong, inspired, and free to be themselves.
What sets Dragonwing apart is our commitment to creating apparel that meets the unique needs of active girls, encouraging them to pursue their passions without compromising on style or comfort. My husband and I oversee every aspect of the business, from designing innovative and trendy apparel to ensuring the highest standards of production and sustainability. Our dedication to quality ensures that each piece is not only fashionable but also durable and practical for various activities, whether it’s sports, dance, or everyday adventures.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our newest collections in the upcoming months, with showcases at three shows during NYFW, as well as additional shows in Dallas and LA, and potentially Paris next spring! We are also excited to introduce women’s sizes to our product offering, expanding our reach and allowing more individuals to experience the Dragonwing difference.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Adaptability: Being adaptable to change and prepared to pivot as needed is crucial. In fashion and production, things rarely go exactly as planned. Embrace flexibility and be ready to adjust your strategies.
Trend Awareness: Staying ahead of the curve by keeping an eye on competitors, trends, and consumer preferences is essential. Continuously learning and staying informed about industry developments can help you remain competitive.
Building Relationships: Investing in the best partners and supporters of the brand, from factory relationships to photographers, PR teams, production companies, and fellow entrepreneurs, has been invaluable. Strong partnerships can provide support, expertise, and opportunities for growth.
For those just starting their journey, remember that you can’t be an expert in everything. Surround yourself with people who can uplift and support you. Share industry knowledge and collaborate. There’s plenty of room at the top for everyone to succeed.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been expanding our product range and increasing our market presence. We’ve successfully launched new collections, including women’s sizes, which has allowed us to reach a broader audience. Our participation in major fashion shows like NYFW, as well as shows in Dallas and LA, has significantly enhanced our brand visibility. Embracing new trends, improving our production processes, and strengthening our customer engagement through social media and community events have also been key areas of improvement.
