Meet Fangjian Li

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fangjian Li. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Fangjian, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I have never been an optimistic person. Before making a decision, I might consider many things, such as the potential consequences and impacts on me, repeatedly thinking about the worst possible outcomes. However, I found myself rarely regretting my choices. On one hand, regret holds little meaning; on the other, I believe that as long as a person is alive, there are infinite possibilities. Our eyes are on the front of our heads, not the back. Reflecting on the past can provide valuable lessons, allowing me to face the unknown future more confidently. Perhaps the most important aspect of staying optimistic is to worry less and just take action. No matter how bad the outcome is, as long as we are alive, we can always start over.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a sound engineer. Before pursuing my master’s degree, I had not found anything that I was truly passionate about. At that time, I chose filmmaking as my graduate major because I had a strong interest in movies. Through learning about the industry, I discovered that filmmaking involves many departments. I wanted to develop a specific skill and gradually realized that the sound department matched my personality and work style. For me, recording clean and authentic sounds is a pleasure. Most of the time, aside from the director and the post-production team, others do not fully understand what the sound department does on set. Sound acts more as an auxiliary tool, enhancing the overall effect of the film when combined with visuals. I personally enjoy working quietly, immersing myself in studying and experimenting with different sound combinations to achieve various effects.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Stay curious, stay focused, and maintain effective communication with people. Curiosity keeps you interested in the unknown, so you will learn more and gain more inspiration. Staying focused not only means being attentive at work but also maintaining boundaries and limits in both work and life, including interactions with others. Within these boundaries, it doesn’t matter how much you try or make mistakes, as long as you ensure you can solve them. For example, “Okay, if I do this, will it affect my work tomorrow? Yes, it will. Then I’ll wait or not do it at all.” Maintaining effective communication with others saves everyone’s time and ensures that your needs are clearly expressed.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

I feel I have become more determined and clearer about what I want. Previously, my world was blurry, and I thought many things seemed good. But now, I have gradually formed a framework, knowing that I want things to be a certain way and working hard to make them that way. I really need a specific goal at work to give me motivation; otherwise, life feels empty. However, I am also gradually adjusting and learning to enjoy my leisure time. Not working does not mean wasting time; it is an excellent opportunity to recharge my brain.
