We were lucky to catch up with Nikel Chism recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nikel, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from God, my parents, being the oldest sibling, and partial stubbornness . There have been many times that I have said I was quitting my business due to hitting a rough patch in my life, but when it came down to it my spirit and God told me I wasn’t finished. I remember when I was filling out the application to dissolve my business I had told everyone I wasn’t going to be in operation anymore. I thought that it was the right thing to do because of what my life was looking like and the many things that were happening but deep down I could feel that it wasn’t the end. As difficult as it was to still hold on when it is very much easier to quit I couldn’t.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner of Nikki’s Delights, which is a dessert and treat business. The most exciting thing about what I do is receiving the feed back on how my product tastes. I am always surprised because I am my biggest critic am I always looking for what can I do better the next time, but when people tell me how great their order turned out and come back to place more orders with me it’s truly a blessing. I try my hardest to implement God in what He has gifted me to do because without Him none of this would be possible. The newest event I am trying to get ready for is the Praise in the Park gospel festival that is being held in Los Angeles on September 28th 2024. There will be food, live music, and plenty of vendors as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities I would say that have been most impactful for me would be the ability to keep learning, discipline, and servitude. To me these three things are very important because when you’re just starting out on an idea, a job, whatever it may be. If we are always thinking we’re the smartest person in the room then one day we will find out that we don’t know as much as we thought, if we can’t be consistent in what we’re trying to build whatever we out on top of the foundation will crumble, and if you are always looking to be served when trying to provide something for someone you will never be satisfied real satisfaction is in doing for others who can’t do for themselves and striving to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The person who has been the most helpful has been my Husband. He has been here with me pushing me, helping me, giving me advice, helping me to see different avenues of how I can make things better for myself and for my future clients. I am very thankful to have him in my life he helps me to keep going when I don’t feel like I can.
