Meet philip page

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Philip Page. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Philip, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I like to explore untold and under-told stories and put them in a cinematic lenses. From there I explore telling these stories in a unique light.

As a DJ, in my younger days, I had to take different approaches to not sound like my peers. I apply this to filmmaking.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

In my childhood I enjoyed art, specifically comic book art. That segue into music and hip hop. Hip hop for me was a calling, I wanted to be in that world. Started making beats on computers which lead me to buying my first turntables. The DJing became my 1st professional gig along with audio mixing. Then I became an educator, my journey as a professor has allowed me to meet great people and collaborate with my former HBCU students. I produced a short film with my former A&T student, Kina Johnson, called Sobriety. Sobriety is doing well in the festival circuit with selections at Black Girls Rock! Film Fest, Black Film Festival of New Orleans and Micheaux Film Festival in LA.

Now I am a profession filmmaker, DP, animator and colorist. Those skills intersect with previous skills. East Market Films is a non-profit that helps fellow black filmmakers with access to gear and crew that may not be available to them.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The will to learn, self motivate and create.

The will to learn is the ability to find learning resources over waiting for them to come.

The will to self motivate is finding motivation through any condition.

The will to create is the ability to conceptualize, craft and create through most conditions.

And get rest. Add the will to share information.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, in filmmaking on all levels, you need collaborators. On the creative side and the business side. Right now, I am looking for co-investors and co-creators for a feature film called Fly Angel. Where a black high school teacher becomes a professional wrestler. This journey displays the microaggressions, sexism, and racism in relationships, education, and professional wrestling.
