We recently connected with Danny Colon and have shared our conversation below.
Danny, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Burnout is a very difficult state to shake, and considering I am running my business while balancing a college coarse load, internships, and living in a new city, it is safe to say I have experienced it a few times. In my experience, although you may not feel the gradual building of it, once it hits you can usually trace back moments where you needed to “mentally reset”. Nowadays, because things don’t seem to be slowing down, I am able to avoid it by focusing my efforts on other passion projects. For example, during this summer when I was really overwhelmed with planning out the rest of the year with Electrix, I decided to focus my efforts on something different like production. Now, we are planning out new original pieces that I am so excited about, and although you may say that it is still work, to me having a break from the mundane day-to-day work is what gets me excited for work now. But I also think the pendulum can swing the other way, where you just need to completely step away and take a break.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Founded in 2020 by a then 15-year-old Danny Colon in New Jersey, Electrix started as an effort to declutter his own closet during quarantine. However, Danny soon discovered his passion for curating unique vintage clothing. Now Electrix has expanded to offer original clothing, custom orders, styling services, pop-up events, and 2 former retail stores in Manasquan, New Jersey. As part of every pop-up event we participate in, a portion of our sales is donated to I.F.C. United – an organization dedicated to supporting individuals in need that larger corporate charities may overlook. This Fall, Electrix is expanding officially into New York City with the opening of a new showroom/studio space, as well as a New York Fashion Week party to go along with it, more information to come.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe all qualities that were most impactful in my journey were gained by fully immersing myself in the industry. I’ve worked in high high fashion all the way to small-batch local businesses, and during this process I’ve gained insights I would have never had unless I made the mistakes myself. I am a very hands-on learner and learn mostly by doing, so I’d recommend to anyone who is jumping into the vintage business to really study the other vintage brands and regular brands in the space, see what you like and don’t like, and apply it in your own way. I liken it to Food Network’s Chopped grading scale: Presentation, Taste, and Creativity. To summarize, Presentation being marketing, Taste being product, and Creativity being what makes you different. If you can do well in all three of those things, you have a solid plan for success.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I think from being in New York I have gotten better at marketing the brand and myself more professionally while still having fun. We did our first NYFW shoot last September and I feel like that alone boosted us in a way I did not expect. From there, I think our brand awareness around the vintage community is slowly but surely growing from our pop-up shop presence as well as events like the runway show and our upcoming NYFW party.
