Meet Hunter Ryan

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hunter Ryan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hunter below.

Hunter, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

When I was 10 years old my father bought a beautifully built home that was in need of a serious update. Watching that process as a child fascinated me. The order of things and the detail that went into it was fascinating. Ever since, I have been obsessed with architecture, design and building. In my early 20’s I purchased my first investment property and took a chance. I was able to self-contract the home and turn a profit. I was hooked! While it took me the better part of a decade to make being a contractor my full-time career, I have been in love with it since day one. Today, I own & operate HS3 General Contracting & Roof King USA.

With that being said, I now have two purposes in my life. My family and my business. I have been blessed with the most amazing wife and two beautiful children. My true purpose in life is to provide for my family and ensure that my children grow up in a stable and comfortable home. Loving what I do is just the icing on the cake.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Being the owner of a contracting & roofing firm, my days consist of mostly company oversight. Whatever that may be. I still love to make my way into the field at least one or two days a week to check on projects, chat with our clients, and ensure quality installations. I am grateful to have found a team that I can trust & rely on to run the daily operations.

My major focuses currently are on growth & brand recognition. We currently have two locations within Arizona. One in Fountain Hills that services the entire Phoenix metroplex, and another in Payson that services all of the Rim Country. We have hopes of adding 2-3 more branches in Arizona over the next 3-5 years.

At HS3 General Contracting and Roof King USA we sincerely pride ourselves on client education and unparalleled customer service. We want to make sure that our clients are beyond well informed, and have the best experience possible. Living through a roofing/construction project can be challenging & stressful. Our staff are here to hold their hand and walk them through it step by step. Ensuring that they are involved as much as they want to be, and receive a product that they are going to be head over heels in love with.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I think the most important qualities you can have has a business owner are compassion, resilience, and education.

Compassion in the work place is incredibly important. You have to be understanding of the feelings and life challenges of others. Whether that be staff, clients, or other contractors. Everyone is their own person and we ALL have our own personal challenges. It is important to assess every situation with care and compassion.

Being resilient is a must as a business owner. There will be constant situations in which you will be mentally and physically taxed, especially in the beginning stages. It is important to have an outlet to where you can let go and regroup. For me, it is my family, regular exercise, and golf with friends.

Education is one of the most important things that should never be overlooked. I went the hard route, My first few investment properties was fly by the seat of my pants and figure it out as I went. While it all turned out fine, I do not wish this upon anyone.

Best advice I can give to those coming up is to take pride in what you do, whatever that might be. Have compassion for your clients and staff. Prepare yourself mentally, maintain healthy hobbies, and educate yourself on a daily basis. If you are not learning, you are regressing.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

This is an easy question to answer for me because it was sooooo hard for me to do. My biggest improvement over the last year is learning how to let go and let people do their jobs. I will admit, I was a micro-manager. I always had to know every detail that was going on. It was not until I brought on my Director of Operations about 18 months ago that I really got the big push. He continually reminded me that we hired the people we did because they are capable and good at what they do. That I needed to put my faith in them and allow them to do their job without interference.

Learning how to do this has been incredibly beneficial. It has allowed for me to take a step back from the day to day operations and focus on company growth. It was the best thing I could have done for my company as it has played out in spades.
