Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryan Powers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ryan with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that a great attitude and a solid work ethic can allow you to achieve anything that you aim to do in life. Within music and creative arts, it is easy to feel that the work you are putting into a project, skill, or routine may not be the most productive method to reach your goals. When it comes to work ethic, I have been around fantastic musicians who have a deep passion for their craft, yet they refuse to put in the effort to reach the next level of goals they have set for themselves. Coming to a realization that I was put on Earth to play music, I decided to outwork everyone that I know and become a master at my passion. What I have found over the last decade of playing music is that consistency is the most effective tool that you can utilize. Having a consistent practice routine, reaching out to the people who can help you, and maintaining the love for your craft will enable you to achieve new heights.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am from a tiny town in East Texas called Eustace. Growing up, my family were normal hard working folks who did absolutely everything they could for me. My closest bond quickly became with my grandfather JT Noble who was a phenomenal musician. JT had played for the majority of his life as a rhythym guitar player, and some of my earliest memories are from watching him play with his band. When I turned eleven I finally asked him to show me some things on the guitar and I quickly fell in love with the instrument. I have been playing ever since and have learned that as a musician you never graduate from being a student. After awhile of improving my craft I joined a band with some friends from high school named Dirty Bynum. This band was special and taught me the highs and lows of being a musician. I now continue to learn more and more about music, its rich history, and fall in love all over again every time I touch the fretboard. Lately I have found my role of being a guitarist for hire, or more commonly known as “Hired Gun” and fill in with around twenty two different bands. I never find myself unamazed at the amount of musicians who share the same love as me and give the same effort as I do for their craft. I am most excited to shout out my permanent bands “Korium”, “The Cole Dagen Band”, “Brayden Stewart”, and “Zachary Burnett & The Washed Up Kids”. Each of these groups have amazing talent and new music coming out in the latter parts of this year. You can find each of these bands on Instagram and keep in touch with us that way. Stay tuned for any of these bands to come to your city and feel free to come say hi!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Honesty, Integrity, and a burning passion for music are the biggest qualities that a musician can have. Often times people associate musicians as party animals who are just looking for a good time. What I have come to learn is that playing music takes a very large toll mentally and physically. Maintaining relationships, being punctual, and preparedness are my big three rules when it comes to performing. Being so passionate about music is the first step and a fantastic quality to have, but if you aren’t prepared to give your absolute 100% all the time then you have to get there. With anything in life, there are hard times, good times, and times when you feel as though there’s a brick wall in front of you preventing you from improving. Navigating these emotions and obstacles leads to awesome breakthroughs that allow you to achieve amazing goals. For those that are just starting out and looking for a step by step, YouTube is one of the greatest tools given to humanity and especially musicians. Listen to a wide variety of music, Absorb what you hear and understand what is happening, and never ever feel as though you have mastered a skill or are the best. As musicians we never will graduate from students.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Within the last 12 months I have began my journey as a Guitarist for Hire and had the opportunity to meet countless impactful people. I have learned an unimaginable amount and have experienced some amazing things. The biggest takeaway that I have learned from these opportunities is to never compromise yourself or your passions. Many people will tell you that what you’re doing isn’t the right path to take or there is a better way to achieve this goal. Life is a journey that we are all on together and every single person has their own unique way to go through it and expereince it. Never allow someone to discourage you of doing what you love and never discredit the work that you have put in that nobody else sees. Always be thankful of the people who helped you to become who you are and the best thing you can possibly do in any circumstance is be yourself unashamedly.
