Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ella Birdsell . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ella , thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
It can be a really awful feeling when you’re working on a project and you get stuck but I also think that it’s a natural part of the creative process. Accepting that inspiration is something that will come and go has been really important for me. I used to worry a lot about creativity blocks but worrying about it has never made me get over them any faster, it’s just made me less excited about the project I’m working on. Instead I’ve found that talking to other artists and exposing myself to new art can give me the change in perspective I need to feel inspired.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an artist and filmmaker currently working on several project I’m excited about. Recently, I have been able to go to several film festivals for a short film I wrote and directed, “Rocks!”, and that has been a really awesome opportunity to meet other artists. I have also gotten the chance to work with some incredible musicians, including Yulia Duzy and Meche Trejo, on some promo and music videos for their upcoming releases. It’s been great getting to collaborate with such amazing people on these projects. I do a lot of painting and some sculpting so I have been working on some new projects there as well. The biggest thing I have going on right now is the creation of my new production company, Bright Moss, with my friend and business partner Macy Jacob. I feel Macy and I share a unique perspective on art and film as young queer women and it’s been a lot of fun to translate that perspective into our art.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think what has helped me the most is gaining as much experience as possible, following my creative passion, and finding a community of other artists. When I started directing, I had no experience in film besides one film class so I felt very unqualified for the roles I was taking on and I was. Despite that, I kept taking on more roles and whether I had experience in them or not trying to learn as much as possible. I think that diving into projects like that helped me learn quickly and feel comfortable taking risks.
There is a pressure for artists to constantly be creating and pumping out content. Especially with social media where the focus can change so rapidly and success is measured by interactions rather than the quality of the content itself. That pressure can suck the fun and authenticity out of creating. I think avoiding comparison and focusing on what fulfills you creatively is important.
The team I work with is so important to me. Having someone to call to bounce ideas off of and to support you is a big help. It’s great to have people who understand the struggles of the industry your in and believe in you.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yeah! We’re always looking for musicians who are interested in creating music videos and for filmmakers who want to collaborate! Bright Moss is a very female and queer focused brand so we’re definitely looking to work with people with a similar perspective.
