We recently connected with Apeksha Agarwal and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Apeksha, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
When I started out, I was often one of the only young brown women pursuing photography in cities like New York and Los Angeles. I was usually the only one who looked like me in a room full of people. To make my mark, I leaned on my knowledge and confidence. Instead of seeing being different as a drawback, I turned it into an advantage. Being the “odd one out” helped me stand out and became my unique selling point, making it my strength rather than a weakness.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Based in New York, I’m a photographer specializing in fashion, beauty, and celebrity photography for both editorial and advertising clients. With an impressive portfolio, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with actors, artists, models, and celebrities from around the world. My work has been featured in prestigious publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, Grazia, and L’Officiel, as well as on billboards in various cities.
Beyond photography, I often take on the role of creative director for many of my projects. What excites me the most is my innovative approach to art, particularly my immersion in Generative AI art. This emerging field has allowed me to establish myself as a visionary artist within the industry. My dedication to pushing artistic boundaries has not only gained me recognition but also made me a sought-after speaker. I’ve been invited to give guest seminars and participate in panel talks at renowned institutions such as the School of Visual Arts, New York Film Academy, B&H, Soho House, and the Federation of Photographic Society of Indonesia.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Staying Updated: Keeping up with industry trends and global events is crucial. The fashion industry, for example, can be influenced by economic shifts or cultural movements. Staying informed allows you to anticipate changes and adapt accordingly. My advice: read industry publications, follow relevant news, and participate in professional forums or groups to stay ahead.
2. Networking: Building a strong network is essential. Connections can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations. Attend industry events, join online communities, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to others in your field. My advice: prioritize genuine relationships and always be open to meeting new people.
3. Proactive Outreach: Don’t hesitate to reach out to potential mentors, clients, or collaborators. The first step is often the hardest, but you never know who might give you your big break. My advice: be bold and persistent. Customize your outreach to show genuine interest and how you can add value to the other party.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They encouraged and supported my creative journey. I started by quitting my job working with my dad in India to move to New York and study photography. They not only fully provided financial support for my education and living expenses during those early years but also consistently motivated me to push my creative boundaries. Their unwavering belief in my potential and their encouragement to step out of my comfort zone played a very crucial part in my growth and success.
