We were lucky to catch up with A.B. Eastwood recently and have shared our conversation below.
A.B. , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My family is built from some of the nicest , selfless people I’ve ever met . When I was younger I remember it was a really cold winter and a homeless guy knocked on our door really early in the morning maybe like 4 am or so . And my parents warmed him up some food , I’m pretty sure gave him so clothes too just on the spot and then we became friends with him . My grandfather has worked in the school system for years and has generations of students who also called him grandad because of the bond he’s built with them. My granny is has helped so many people through her church and through the Sisters Network which brings together women who have had breast cancer , currently have it and those in remission . Kindness is very much so hereditary in my family
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a producer , DJ , musician , music director , tour manager , all around music guy .
I started playing trumpet in the 5th grade and it’s been my passion ever since .
Over the years it’s evolved from playing trumpet throughout highschool to picking up piano seriously into my freshman year which is where I was introduced to producing . At Tennessee State University, I met Dubba-AA who took me under his wing and taught me production . From 2013-2016 we went back and forth from south Florida where I got to really learn not just about making music but the music business as well up close and personal working with a young Kodak black and spending a lot of time at We The Best Studios .
In 2017 I came back home and invested my in my friends and that start to really expand my horizons . I started to produce , play and DJ behind some of my best friends ( Bryant Taylorr , Lo Naurel , Jamiah , Tim Gent) In this period ( 2017-2023) we all grew together musically and as family . We grinded and still are , currently Bryant , Tim & I are signed to Prescription Songs and Jamiah and Lo have been touring for the last 3 years non stop . Last year I got tour with Coldplay in the fall as a dj for an opening act . Top of this year along side my good friend Neahn West we through a cowboy Carter listening party in downtown Nashville that got featured in USA Today and the New York Times
This summer my wife and I moved to Los Angeles to continue to build and experience something new
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Faith ,Patience and Consistency
There’s a lot I’ve been able to accomplish that I can’t take credit for . God has been incredible in my life . So many things that I wasn’t sure of and honestly wasn’t sure I knew how to do worked out incredible and I attest that to leaning on faith and taking leaps that seemed to big .
The music industry is a trying one and can take a lot of a person . I’ve had to learn to be patient and stand on what you believe. You don’t have to compromise your character for opportunities, what’s meant for you will be there for you . Also as I strive to be great , I’ve learned that patience is a main ingredient in legacy , you gotta give yourself time to learn and develop , time to fail and get back up . Nothing happens overnight
Passion is real . when you find it it’s important to nurture it and stay at it so it can reach its full potential . There’s tons of songs that I’ve made and been apart of that you’ll never hear . There’s a lot of ideas and blueprints and sketches that won’t come to life but I’ll keep trying , and I’ll keep learning . I love the art , I love the chase of greatness and I’m in love with duty of being consistent. It isn’t always fun and it definitely isn’t always easy but it is fair . What you put in is what you get out of it .
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My ability to say no . I was in a period for awhile that I said yes to everything . Every session , every show , every opportunity and it was stretching me thin . It hasn’t healthy for me , my relationship with my wife or with God .
After really taking my relationship with God a lot more serious , it restructured my faith and allowed to see that my success isn’t dependent on how much I can get done . You can work 28 hrs in a day / 375 days in a year and it can’t amount to what faith can do . So now with that as my back bone I’m able to say no to things instead of yes out of desperation
