Meet Amy Yung

We recently connected with Amy Yung and have shared our conversation below.

Amy, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism stems from overcoming the various obstacles and setbacks I’ve faced in life. Each challenge has taught me that no matter how difficult things may seem, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. These experiences have reinforced my belief that resilience and a positive mindset can turn even the toughest situations around. Through every setback, I’ve learned that persistence and a hopeful outlook are key to finding solutions and moving forward. This perspective not only keeps me motivated but also inspires me to support others in their journeys, reminding them that hope and perseverance can lead to brighter days.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Becoming an artist was not something I envisioned as a child. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was immersed in a school system that placed a strong emphasis on academics. My days were filled with studying, leaving little room for creative pursuits. It wasn’t until high school, when I had the opportunity to study abroad in Boston, that I enrolled in my first art class. I vividly remember my first free drawing assignment – a portrait of a pug. To my surprise, the drawing was showcased at school, revealing to me a latent talent and igniting my passion for art.

Despite this newfound interest, I pursued a BS degree in Marketing instead of following the artistic path. However, a health condition later in life became a turning point for me. It made me reflect on what I genuinely love and the importance of not wasting time on unfulfilling endeavors. This realization spurred me to pursue art wholeheartedly. Life is too short not to chase what brings us joy.

Today, I am fortunate to express my thoughts and emotions through art. The creative process brings me immense peace and a sense of freedom. Art has become a vital part of my life, allowing me to connect with myself and the world in a deeply meaningful way.

I co-founded an art studio with my friends, where we hosted art classes for people of all ages, from kids to adults. Our studio became a sanctuary for art enthusiasts, a place where creativity could flourish. We took pride in helping students gain admission to art colleges and providing a space for artists to sharpen their skills. Throughout this period, I continued to paint and participate in exhibitions, constantly striving to evolve as an artist.

When the pandemic hit, it presented a unique opportunity for introspection and growth. I decided to embrace a new challenge and accepted a graphic design position. This role was a perfect avenue for me to continue learning, as it allowed me to explore various tools and techniques in design. My love for learning and adapting to new creative mediums kept me motivated and inspired during this transition. This experience not only expanded my skill set but also enriched my artistic journey.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Persistence, openness, and positivity are the three key qualities that have shaped my journey as an artist.

Persistence has kept me determined and focused, helping me overcome challenges and achieve my goals.

Openness has allowed me to embrace new experiences and opportunities, enriching my creative vision and leading to unexpected opportunities.

Positivity has helped me push through obstacles with resilience and optimism.

These qualities were crucial in gaining acceptance into art college and continuing my artistic journey. By staying persistent, open, and positive, I’ve been able to navigate life’s challenges and seize new opportunities.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I’ve discovered that when I feel overwhelmed, taking a moment to pause and absorb everything around me can be incredibly helpful. Allowing myself time to process everything helps me think more clearly and determine my next steps. This brief period of reflection enables me to regain my focus, prioritize effectively, and approach challenges with a calm and composed mindset.
