We recently connected with Lingam and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lingam, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I had the great opportunity of growing up in a family that understood the importance of the younger generation taking on responsibilities at an early age. All throughout my youth my siblings, cousins and I maintained our families massive garden by plowing the fields, laying seeds, running lines and even completing all the picking and prep that each vegetable required before cooking and eating.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Finding my place in the world has been a life long journey, I’ve explored many of my interest and talents over the years but currently my time is split between visual arts and music.
As an artist I’ve been focused on pop surrealism based on dreams I had that involved characters from childhood cartoons. This has been a very fun series to experiment with using mostly found materials like wood and used canvases to create my surrealistic blend of imagination and reality. Having the opportunity to exhibit my work for the next few months at The Half sandwich shop on Red Cross street here in Wilmington has really opened my work up to a much wider audience locally. This is my second showing at The Half, the first was very successful and featured original characters from my series titled Tribe of the Infinite: Minds of Tomorrow.
As a musician I started off playing the trumpet in elementary school which lead to learning and mastering the brass section finally settling on the baritone playing in jazz band at Mount Olive College ( now UMO) as I earned my graphic design degree.
Currently my musical focus is on djaying events around town as Infinite Spins while also rapping and producing my own songs under the moniker High Chi3f. As Infinite Spins I do pop up record sales weekly at Mad Mole Brewing as well as Discogs online. Vinyl Night at Mad Mole has turned into a great venue to connect with other music lovers while sharing the sounds that bring me joy.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Definitely understanding your audience and what you want to say to them is the first area of knowledge we should all invest. Understanding that failure is an important part of success, those moments give us insight into what works and doesn’t work for us and help build resilience to keep growing and improving. Lastly knowing your crafted and that no matter how good you are that you continue to build and improve on your skills and knowledge base. Aligning yourself with people who excel in the area you are interested in is the fastest way to developing this aspects.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Collaboration is an important part of anyones creative journey. I would love to connect with individuals and business that invested in improving our community and who are also interested in exploring creative projects. Currently I operate as a mobile record store as Infinite Spins but a. physical location would open up so many more doors for me and help me share the music I love with a wider audience.
