Meet Dominique James

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique James a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dominique, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I was always inspired by the entrepreneurial stories of others, because it was a constant reminder that my dreams were in reach and no goal was ever too big and I am capable of any lifestyle I want, which is far from a basic one. I know I have been created to create in this life. That combined with never wanting to settle for the bare minimum of life has created a unstoppable drive. Because from the things I have conquers and overcame put proof to the pudding that, “Where there is no struggle there is no strength.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a first-generation college student from a huge family, I’ve faced moments that could either make or break me. The fear of looking back and knowing I didn’t make an impact or achieve my greatest dreams drives me to persevere. My focus now is on transforming my duo brand into an international extravaganza that people around the world can experience. As the creative mastermind behind event planning and design, I am also the proud owner of Hideout Orlando. Here, we not only bring your events to life but also provide a versatile venue for hosting events, exercise classes, capturing content, and more.
My team and I are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community while growing a profitable business. With plans to expand nationally over the next seven years, we embrace the philosophy of “Collaboration over competition.” We aim to work within our community to teach young girls the power of elegant etiquette and help them embrace their own M’pressive lifestyle.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Being a visionary, problem-solving, and driven are the three qualities you NEED in the even planning and entrepreneur space. It’s actually something that friends and family had been urging me to see for years, but I always thought it was this big huge thing that I didn’t have time for. Turns out that I was making it more difficult in my head than it actually was! Having an outlet to share my thoughts and experiences, on my terms, is one of the most liberating things I’ve done for myself in a while. Something I would tell someone early on in their journey is to remember that your dreams are within reach, and no goal was ever too big. No problem is ever non-solvable. Learn how to think out the box, embrace every challenge and remember without collaboration, you can only go so far as an event planner.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Hiring good help, for sure. We are working on our back end systems to help streamline the business and give our team mates resources that they can leverage but systems only work as good as competence and work ethic allows. A lot of people want to shine without learning how to polish, as a business owner and creative designers, trusting others to carry a vision out with the same drive and ambition as myself can be a struggle. I am actively working on knowing how to leverage and delegate while keeping clients and partners happy.
