Meet Carolina Carvajal

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carolina Carvajal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Carolina, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I got my work ethic from my mom.
She is a very smart woman, she grew up in not the best conditions and against all odds she now provides for our whole family.
I’ve seen her rise and I’ve learned that dedication pays off.
Her discipline and love for what she does has inspired me in doing the best I can in each project that I work in.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a 23 year old woman from Mexico City, who decided to move to the US about 3 years ago.
I got my bachelors in film and ever since I started I knew the art department was for me.

I do production design,
Production design is meant to create where the story is going to unravel. It’s creating a concept, a feel and a place. With that comes gathering an amazing team, designing and making it a reality.
My favorite part is adding details so our audience is emerged and soaked with the surroundings. Each scene must feel like a composition, everything must be there for a reason.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Specially for my area I have become really handy when it comes to construction work and knowing my power tools.
Working with adobe Illustrator has also been very useful when incorporating graphic design.
Being quick on your toes and aware of what’s happening is very important.
Adapt, every shoot has its bumps. Something is bound to change so being prepared and adapting is a must.
Talking to fellow filmmakers, sometimes we don’t realize it, but we might be a little attached to our workflow. It’s good to get a different perspective.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Creating a set can be overwhelming, especially for longer projects. Those which involve more challenging or ambitious ideas can also be stressful to even fathom.
What I do is concentrate on one step at the time. If everything is rushed or not well thought out it can become even more difficult to overcome in the future. So going step by step and having fun with the project can be really helpful.
Enjoy the process!
