We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michyla Vig a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michyla, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I like to think my work ethic came from my childhood. I was raised on an organic farm in Ontario Canada. We didn’t have employees, it was just us kids and my parents so we learned from a young age how to stay motivated and to work hard. Not to say that there weren’t times where we would complain, and drag out feet. However those times helped in shaping the work ethic I have now.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Michyla, I am a full time pilates instructor who spends all her free time at the gym, in pilates / yoga studios, climbing mountains with my dog, rollerblading, travelling and really just living life as actively as I can. I am the owner and founder of an online pilates platform called KALON PILATES, I quit my 9-5 job officially in March of 2024, and dove head first into teaching pilates online and in person. My online Pilates brand focuses on finding the beauty in movement instead of moving our bodies to obtain a specific “beauty standard”. We aim to embrace all body types, showcasing that the stereotypical “pilates body” is unrealistic and not something you need to obtain or will obtain by doing pilates.
All of our online classes are between 10-30min long, they are shorter pilates classes, because we know that finding the time to move your body isn’t always as easy as we would like. There are options for you to do a longer more intense class if you have time, but then also options if you only have 10-15min of time before picking up the kids from school, still effective workouts, but created with the busy mom, business owner or traveller in mind.
We also launch challenges every 2-3 months, coming up in September is our 15 day Core Control Challenge, you can sign up online for the challenge by creating a membership, this also gives you access to all our online pilates and stretch classes, then you can decide after you finish the challenge if you want to keep or cancel the membership.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I think the three skills that really were most impactful on my business journey were motivation, determination, and patience.
I had to continually stay motivated and determined to keep going, regardless of how I was feeling day to day. Starting a business from scratch is scary, daunting and discouraging, you have to continually remind yourself it will be worth it, you’ll always have set backs and curve balls but as long as you stay motivated and determined you will come out ontop.
Patience is not something that comes easy to me, if I think of an idea I need it to happen immediately, I don’t like to wait, and sometimes can be my biggest downfall. I have learned to be patient with myself as well, to remind myself that even though other people who are on the same journey as me may be farther along, I am right where I need to be.
.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Kalon is always looking to collaborate with any health, wellness, retreat or activewear brands. We are currently doing a collaborative wellness retreat with another fitness coach in Costa Rica in November of 2024, and will continue to work with other brands as well.
As the main instructor of Kalon Pilates I am also available for events, retreats, hotel events ect. all over the world. I plan on teaching for a few hotels in different countries in the next year, along with travelling to a few different wellness events being hosted around Canada.
