We recently connected with Donte Dodson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Donte , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Purpose is super important to me, and as cliche as it sounds I found my purpose through struggle & hardship. My purpose is to use my voice to help motivate & inspire anybody that I can. We all go through our own problems & struggles & with social media a lot of people tend to hide the hardships & struggles because of what people might think. Which is totally understandable & people will judge for it unfortunately, but more importantly there’s someone going through something similar that could benefit from your point of view & could potentially help change someone’s perspective for the better. I’ve learned that sharing my own struggles & using it to motive myself has helped other people deal with their own problems or atleast inspire or motivate them to keep going or to keep fighting. It’s hard to relate to the person who has the perfect life(or appears to have the perfect life) so being yourself & being open with your own battles is much more relatable & helpful to people. For me that’s how I found my purpose. I do the same thing with my music. I use music to paint a picture or a story that people can relate to. Using my voice to help anybody I can. As far as my purpose there is a quote from the late great 2pac that describes it perfectly
“I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world”
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an artist & creative. I make music & im currently working on writing a book. I haven’t made music for alittle bit now but I have a lot of music out there right there that I enjoy still to this day & that people can enjoy. My artist name is DonDrizzy for anyone who would like to checkout my music on Apple or Spotify.
I’m currently working on writing a book on my experiences & outlook on life & redefining the term “failure” because I struggle with the idea of me being a failure due to not becoming wealthy or well known & I’m sure there are other people going through the same thing so maybe I can present failure in a way where it’s not looked down upon but looked at as a work in progress & someone who has potential to be great & just hasn’t found it yet. & that’s an important message for me to put out into the world because I believe it can help other people.
I’m not rich, I’m not successful so people may not think what I have to say is valuable but maybe we could learn more from the people in the same positions we are in compared to learning From someone who may be successful but never went through what some people go through or had to deal with hardships of not making good money & not having the resources to build something. I may never be successful myself but maybe my words can inspire the next person who will become successful & that’s what it’s all about.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful to me in my journey were
Learning to be a student of whatever it is you’re getting into. Studying the field you’re wanting to be in so you can understand how it really works.
Being honest & upfront with not only myself but with the world as well & learning to be okay with people laughing or making fun of my situation. It’s not about the haters it’s about the people you can potentially impact in a positive way.
Learning to be more confident in my abilities & being okay with who I am as person. Social media can make everybody feel like they are not good enough or not doing enough & overtime that will take a huge toll on your mental health & well being. Be confident in who you are & know you bring value to the world.
My advice to anyone just getting started on their journey or path to their own success is to just be yourself & learn to be okay with being yourself. As easy as it seems it’s not easy when you post on social media or involved in putting yourself out there to the world. Be okay with people not liking you or having harsh opinions on your journey. I think people are most powerful when they can be themselves & not care what everyone thinks. If you can get past that you’ll be as successful as you want to be.
As far being a student of the game, never try to be the “know it all” person & be the “asks questions” person. Some people think asking questions means you’re not as smart as someone who doesn’t ask questions which is not true at all. The person who is asking questions & studying the field they are in will always win in the long run because by asking questions you’ll get answers that most people won’t get because they don’t wanna ask or seem “stupid” for asking. Always be on the path of learning more & having the mentality of getting as much information as I can. I promise over time you’ll be most knowledgeable person in almost every room you go into.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
There always a challenge to face when pursuing a goal. For me right now I’m battling self doubt, feelings of not being good enough, wanting to give up my pursuit of my goals & aspirations. I’m re learning & re training my mentality to let go of those narratives & to allow myself to be more free & not let results or numbers dictate how I feel about myself & my goals. It’s a process Forsure & super difficult but it’s a battle worth fighting because after you conquer it, you’ll be a better & higher version of yourself & that will get you to where you want to go.
