We recently connected with Soloman Crowe and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Soloman with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I think my work ethic comes from years of being a hard-core drug addict. When you’re using, you’ll do whatever it takes to get your next fix. Lying, stealing, cheating, I’ve done it all.
I learned to play guitar and sing as a way to make money when I was homeless. Every dollar I made on the street was spent on drugs, alcohol and occasionally food or gas money. I cant pin point the exact moment it all changed for me, but I know it was around the time I met my now wife.
Suddenly, instead of doing whatever it took to get high, I was doing whatever it took to stay clean.
That meant losing every single “friend” I had, atleast those who weren’t already dead. That meant leaving my family behind, legally changing my name and moving halfway across the country to start a new life from scratch, away from that environment and those people.
Now that I’ve done all that and have been clean for 3 years, I’ve got a beautiful wife, a perfect baby daughter and a music career that started on the street corner. Now I play 5 nights a week to hundreds of people every night and I’ve never been so happy.
All of this, I learned during my addiction. I learned how to do whatever it takes to get what I want. I also learned that I’m strong enough to overcome anything.
So yea, my work ethic comes from years of hard-core drug addiction.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
When I was still in active addiction I was the absolute worst version of myself. I lied to everyone constantly about everything. So much so, that I didn’t even know what the truth of anything was anymore.
That’s when I started writing songs.
It was the only time I knew how to be honest. It started as a way to be honest with myself. I never really intended on sharing them with anyone.
But when I did, people responded so positively and for the first time ever, I actually felt good about myself. These brutally honest songs I wrote about myself, were connecting with people and even helping them.
That’s my focus now. That’s what keeps me going.
I’ve heard that it’s the duty of the artist to venture into the darkness, and bring back something tangible for others to heal themselves with. And I believe that wholeheartedly.
So that’s what I do now.
Currently my wife and I just launched a production company called Crowes Nest Productions. We are super excited to start taking on clients and making music together.
Apart from that, I’m recording a few new songs and preparing for my first ever tour in November! Follow me on socials for those details, I’d love to meet and talk to anyone that connects with this music.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Number 1, authenticity.
Relentless authenticity. You just have to be so honest and open with yourself about who YOU are and what YOU want in life.
Number 2.
You gotta get off your ass dude. Just get up and do something, anything in service to your goals. However small, it still counts.
Number 3.
Have fun! The destination is overrated. Enjoy the journey and surrender the outcome. Just be authentic, work hard, and have fun.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
YES!
I am always looking to collaborate with anyone in recovery and music circles. You can find me on all the socials, just make sure you spell my name right!
