Meet Velmy Trinidad

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Velmy Trinidad. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Velmy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Hello, my name is Velmy Trinidad. I have been taking dance classes since I was very little. When I was 13 years old, I told my mother and one of my dance teachers that I wanted to be a dancer. Nobody liked this and they advised me to study a university degree. As time went by, I was very sure that what I wanted was to dance. I never stopped dancing, I studied and continued dancing different styles. I had several jobs, in addition to offering dance classes to children.

Since I was very little I knew that my purpose in this life was to bring the art of dance to other people, offering classes and at the same time with presentations.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

6 years ago I arrived in Greensboro NC, from Puerto Rico. At that time I thought that everything was over for me as a dancer and dance teacher. I didn’t know anyone, the language was a limitation and I had 2 small children. But my passion and love for dance pushed me to start from scratch. I started teaching Zumba classes where I studied English. I got to teach Flamenco (Spanish Dance) classes in Liberty NC, little by little in that dance studio they gave me the opportunity to teach more classes of different styles.
In 2019 I began to collaborate as a Zumba instructor for Greensboro Downtown Park and this is where the opportunity begins. The park gives me the opportunity after the pandemic to not only teach Zumba but also to do dance workshops. In this first Sevillanas workshop in spring 2023, Flamenco Dance Program was born. The workshop was a success that moved to weekly Flamenco classes in Greensboro Cultural Center. We have been offering these classes for 2 years at the Basic, Intermediate and Children’s levels. Sevillanas workshops and this past spring a Belly Dance class was added.

In these past 2 years I have had the opportunity to do community presentations with my students and bring the beauty of flamenco dancing to many places. As a professional dancer I have been able to perform in different restaurants and private activities. A dream that materializes with a lot of work but great satisfaction.

Our class times are Thursday 6pm Flamenco Basic, Thursday 7pm Sevillanas Workshop, Friday 4pm flamenco kids (4-12 years old) Saturdays flamenco intermediate. Wednesday 6:30 pm Belly Dance beginners. All at Greensboro Cultural Center room 403

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Having studied dance for so many years, and having had previous experience as an instructor. Not letting myself be defeated by obstacles. Keeping my mind focused on what I want to achieve. I’m not saying it’s easy. I still have many things to achieve and there will always be times when one doubts, but you can’t let that feeling take over you. You have to achieve your goals and fight for what you love. Dancing is something I’m passionate about, not only teaching but being able to bring happiness to others through dance is a wonderful feeling.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

Over the last 12 months, the Flamenco Dance Program has been about adding another style of class, growing the group of children and seeing how they stand on stage with all the confidence in the world.
As a professional dancer, I have new opportunities to dance with other professionals.
Personally, I have been certified in different areas of fitness. These last 12 months, I have grown a lot and learned more. I look forward to continuing in this expansion.
