We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Divine a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi James, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
God is our Creator, our Father, our Purpose. I start each day by spending time with Him in prayer for others and for myself. Then I study His word to us – the Holy Bible. It has words of wisdom that help me find that purpose. After this, then you have to implement what you learn. Each day, pour out into the world what you have learned. Cover the world with the things you are good at. When you’re younger you’ll discover some things you’re not good at and others you’re great at. Keep working at spending more of your time on the great things.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a jazz musician and motivational speaker. Using music, personal stories, humor, and my 105 year old sax – I share with people that although they may be scratched, dented, and abused – like my sax – God can still use them to pour a beautiful symphony of sound into the world.
I have also put together a goal-setting seminar where I teach people the six areas of their lives they should have goals in, as well as how to properly set a SMART goal. I share with them how – on a teacher’s and dental hygienist’s salary and getting a late start – my wife and I are just 2 years away from being millionaires – not by inheriting any money, but simply by starting to save 15% of our incomes 20 years ago.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities are persistence (pushing through when things are hard), getting advice/mentorship (but also knowing when to ignore that advice), and learning how and what to say no to (say no to the good in order to pursue the great).
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking for schools – specifically school counselors – who would like to bring my “Empower Your Future” goal-setting seminar into their school.
