Meet Brenda Shelton

We recently connected with Brenda Shelton and have shared our conversation below.

Brenda , thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?

I recently was laid off by a company who provides proptech solutions to multi-family operators. In my role, I trained my clients on how to make edits to their websites, invest in digital advertising, as well as provide product support services. After my role was impacted, I realized that this is the perfect time to dive into real estate full time. Working a 9-5 and being a part time realtor was slowly taking a toll on me. Texas has a thriving real estate market with opportunities for growth. I am passionate about helping families through transitions. The best way to overcome a layoff is be proactive and explore new opportunities. Now, I have availability to show up for my clients, show homes, prepare offers, etc. I am adapting to a new schedule so it is important that I give myself time to adjust to all of the recent changes. I am loving this new chapter!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

On top of being a full time real estate agent, I love creating travel, food, and home decor content. Instagram is my favorite platform, but I am showcasing an apartment tour series on TikTok which has been fun to create. I prioritize self care and wellness. I enjoy taking walks with my mini poodle and exploring Dallas. I take pride in knowing about what is coming to Dallas, the newest restaurants, coffee shops, and entertainment centers. I moved to Texas in 2019 from Indianapolis, Indiana. I spent my first 3 years in Fort Worth. I had so much time to explore!

In March 2024, I launched Ellamdrn. Ellamdrn offers elevated home decor aesthetics. Our products are affordable and curated, and prove that less is more. I am looking forward to participating in local small business pop ups in Dallas. Feel free to shop at ellamdrn.com.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Networking has been the most impactful. I have the ability to communicate with just about anyone. I am not afraid to be my true authentic self. Conversing comes natural to me, I am thankful for the ability to find common ground with my friends and clients. I am also knowledgeable about the real estate market. I feel comfortable answering questions and addressing my client’s concerns. Staying up to date on what is coming to the area such as new communities and resturaunts. I have a journalism background and love reading articles. Persistence, creativity, and time management are important. Real estate is a competitive and challenging industry, I trust that my hard work will pay off.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

Absolutely go all in with your strengths! You learn by doing and putting yourself out there. Over time, you can invest in improving yourself by continuing education, gaining a mentor, and taking on new challenges. If you are strong in a particular area, master that and learn along the way.

Real estate is complex. When I started, I focused on apartments. I still do. Mastering apartments allows me to meet renters and renters turn into buyers eventually. If I tried to tackle, commercial real estate, investments, farm and ranch, condos, residential, etc. I would be overwhelmed. My strengths are communication, residential, social media/marketing, and organization. Having a niche has been helpful. If I experience a slow season, I schedule trainings and take courses to ensure I am staying educated.
