Meet Addison Van

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Addison Van a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Addison, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?

Overcoming creativity blocks has been an ongoing journey that intertwines my personal experiences and professional endeavors. Having graduated high school this past May, I have encountered numerous challenges and opportunities that have shaped my approach to tackling creative slumps. My approach to beating these blocks is rooted in stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking new perspectives, and embracing perseverance.

One of my most effective strategies for overcoming creativity blocks is stepping outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the many moments when I’ve done this, I’ve realized that challenging my usual behavior can unlock new levels of creativity. For example, this summer, I pursued several unique licenses and certifications, including obtaining my Texas Real Estate Agent license, becoming an ordained minister for weddings, and even getting certified in rat tickling for laboratory testing purposes at my university. These experiences have broadened my perspective, fueling my creative process. By venturing beyond my usual limits and embracing spontaneity of new topics, I create a mental space where ideas can flow freely and naturally.

My dedication to making a positive impact in my community has also been a powerful motivator in overcoming creativity blocks. The desire to help others, whether through connecting with my peers or simply offering support and encouragement, drives me to push through moments of stagnation. This outward focus not only helps me generate new ideas but also provides a sense of purpose that propels me forward.

Perseverance has been another crucial element in my journey to overcoming creativity blocks. Throughout my career, I have faced numerous challenges, including personal doubts about my abilities and the intricacies of managing a business. Each obstacle has been an opportunity for growth and learning. By viewing challenges as stepping stones rather than barriers, I’ve cultivated a mindset of resilience and determination. This perspective has allowed me to approach creative blocks with the same tenacity, understanding that persistence will eventually lead to breakthroughs.

Flexibility and adaptability have also played significant roles in my ability to beat creativity blocks. The business landscape, especially in the realm of technology and media, is constantly evolving. Being able to pivot and adjust strategies has been essential in staying ahead of the curve. This adaptability extends to my creative process as well. By pivoting outside of my comfort zone and experiencing new things, I find new perspectives that help break through my slump. These shifts in perspective often provide the inspiration needed to overcome these blocks.

Finally, engaging with my peers and seeking inspiration from the world around me has been a valuable strategy in overcoming creativity blocks. Whether it’s participating in community events, supporting local initiatives, or simply exploring new places, these experiences provide fresh perspectives and ideas. They remind me of the importance of staying connected to the world and drawing inspiration from diverse sources.

Overcoming creativity blocks has been a multifaceted journey that involves stepping outside my comfort zone to seek new perspectives, focusing on helping others, and engaging with my community. These strategies have not only helped me navigate through these challenging blocks but have also enriched my creative process and allowed me to continue making a positive impact in both my personal and professional life. By embracing discomfort, continuously learning, and staying connected to the world around me, I have transformed obstacles into opportunities, proving that creativity thrives when we dare to venture beyond the familiar.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are optimism, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning. Optimism has enabled me to approach challenges with a positive mindset, viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth. Adaptability has been crucial in the rapidly changing digital landscape, allowing me to pivot strategies and stay ahead of trends. Finally, my commitment to continuous learning has kept me curious and driven to expand into various industries and fields.

Though I’m still early in my journey and about to begin college, my advice for those just starting is to focus on cultivating optimism by maintaining a positive outlook and finding lessons in every setback. Develop adaptability by being open to new experiences and willing to change course when necessary. Lastly, prioritize continuous learning by seeking new knowledge and skills through formal education, online courses, or hands-on experience. These qualities will help you navigate your journey and ensure you remain dynamic and forward-thinking in your endeavors.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

One book that has profoundly influenced my development is “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel. This book delves deep into the relationship between people and money, highlighting that financial success is more about behavior and mindset than technical knowledge. One of the most impactful concepts I took from the book is the idea of delayed gratification. Housel argues that the ability to postpone immediate pleasures for future rewards is a crucial factor in building and maintaining wealth.

This principle of delayed gratification has fundamentally shaped my spending habits. Instead of giving in to the allure of instant gratification, I’ve learned to prioritize long-term financial stability. For example, I now focus on saving and investing rather than making impulsive purchases. This shift in mindset has enabled me to build a solid financial foundation and avoid the pitfalls of debt and financial stress. It’s a constant reminder that the real measure of wealth is not in visible luxuries but in the financial security and freedom that come from prudent money management.

Another key takeaway from the book is the importance of understanding the role of luck and risk in financial outcomes. Housel emphasizes that everyone’s financial journey is unique, influenced by factors beyond their control. This perspective has taught me to be more patient and forgiving with myself and others when financial goals aren’t met as quickly as anticipated. It has also instilled in me a sense of humility, recognizing that while hard work and good decisions are crucial, they must be coupled with an acknowledgment of the inherent uncertainties in life.

“The Psychology of Money” also stresses the value of simplicity in financial planning. Complex strategies and investments might seem impressive, but they can often lead to unnecessary risk and confusion. I’ve embraced the idea that straightforward, consistent saving and investing often yield the best results. This approach has helped me stay focused on my financial goals without being distracted by the latest trends or high-risk opportunities.

Lastly, the book underscores the power of compounding and the importance of time in growing wealth. Understanding that small, consistent contributions can lead to significant growth over time has changed my approach to both savings and personal development. It’s taught me patience and the importance of starting early, whether it’s with investments or skill-building.

In summary, “The Psychology of Money” has been instrumental in shaping my financial philosophy and habits. It has taught me the importance of delayed gratification, the role of luck and risk, the value of simplicity, and the power of compounding. These lessons have not only improved my financial health but have also instilled a deeper sense of discipline, patience, and long-term thinking in all areas of my life.
