We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joyce Medeiros. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with JOYCE below.
Hi JOYCE, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Feeling like an imposter can be tough. For me, it pushed me to keep moving forward. Being a first-generation immigrant woman and diving into the competitive world of finance was a whole new challenge. Securing a spot on the trading floor at Goldman Sachs felt like a life achievement, but as soon as I set foot there, imposter syndrome hit me hard.
Beating imposter syndrome isn’t about making it vanish completely. It’s about embracing that discomfort and using it as motivation. Whenever self-doubt crept in, I told myself, “You deserve to be here because you’ve got what it takes.” I was surrounded by the most impressive people, and I knew I had so much room to grow and learn. My determination to succeed never wavered.
The journey was far from easy, it defined who I am today. My immigrant work ethic, fueled by that sense of not quite “fitting in”, not only helped me survive but thrive in a challenging environment. I turned the discomfort into a driving force to push my limits and continuously better myself. I appreciate that I am a bit different nowadays.
That’s where Investrio plays a key role. During my time in the corporate world, I witnessed many coworkers, particularly women grappling with financial worries similar to those I experienced as a young adult. This fueled my passion to make financial knowledge more accessible, take the lessons I had learned in my time in fintech, and build something brand new. My desire to democratize financial literacy and empower others to take control of their future became my new mission
If you feel imposter syndrome in your career, you are pushing yourself and aiming high—and that is the good news. It’s a sign you’re on the right track. It means you’re challenging yourself and reaching for your full potential. Embrace that discomfort and use it to fuel your ambition.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
So many things come to mind, but these three qualities (communication, curiosity, and humility) have been instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey so far. I’ve navigated challenges, built a strong team, and created a meaningful impact.
Communication is an underrated skill. Not only is it crucial for building relationships and inspiring teams, but it is also crucial for conveying your vision clearly. Being able to articulate your ideas concisely and persuasively is paramount. I really recommend founders practice this like a muscle in the gym. Ask for feedback and practice both written and verbal storytelling.
I think I ended up as an entrepreneur because I am so curious. The good part is that curiosity drives innovation, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of your product and customers. You are on to something if you constantly seek knowledge and don’t settle for the status quo. Keep asking questions and looking for diverse perspectives outside of your comfort zone. Explore big ideas; they are worthy of a life’s mission.
Confidence is essential for leadership, but humility is equally important. Humility allows you to learn from others, build strong relationships, and adapt to challenges. I believe my Latina genes passed this one down, but every day, I have to acknowledge my limitations and ask for help. My team is more collaborative and productive because of it. Success is a collective effort.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People has profoundly impacted my life—I read it every year. Its timeless wisdom continues to resonate, even in our fast-paced digital age. The simple principles have shaped my leadership approach, building relationships, and navigating challenges. It is a constant reminder of the fundamental principles of human interaction. Here are some of my valuable nuggets of wisdom:
– Genuine interest in others: You build trust and create lasting connections by genuinely caring about others. (This can generate new business ideas too!)
– The art of effective communication: Understanding your audience and tailoring your message accordingly is crucial for effective communication (and marketing!).
– The value of appreciation and recognition: By acknowledging your team’s efforts, you boost morale and create a sense of belonging.
