We caught up with the brilliant and insightful John Goolsby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
John, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I was working as a corporate video producer for a large food company in the 1980’s. I liked the job a lot, but it was just a job. A friend hired me to film their wedding and after it was finished, I took a VCR to their house to play the video since so few people owned them at the time. The bride loved her video so much that she cried. I was used to getting paid for my work, but the client’s gratitude added another layer of compensation that was better than money. I was fortunate to find a career that provided financial compensation along with gratitude from my clients.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve always believed that our most prized possessions are not things, but the memories of our adventures, celebrations and the people we love. Typically, we only remember 10% of what we experience. The challenge is all memories fade and most eventually disappear. I deliver time travel with a vehicle that allows us to retain our memories/most prized possessions.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve always been good at connecting the dots. Understanding what is really important in life and understanding that it can be different for everyone. A video communication needs to be cognizant of human emotion in order to communicate in a way that motivates, educates and persuades viewers to take a specific action. This has been most helpful in the work I do for non-profits and ministries. I’ve been to 29 countries so far producing films for faith-based organizations.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I tested high in junior high but didn’t perform well in advanced math mostly because I wasn’t motivated. On the first day of high school, my algebra teacher told us that Americans were the laziest people in the world and that’s why we are the most productive. We are constantly finding ways to produce more with less effort…and Algebra will help you do that. He found a way to connect with me and I ended up getting straight A’s for two years and skipping a year of high school. The second would be my dad who often said “don’t take something easy and make it hard.” Because of those two, I’ve always been motivated to complete projects as efficiently as possible and produce training films to help other do the same.
