We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Urmee Saiya. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Urmee below.
Urmee, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping creativity alive as a filmmaker involves continuously feeding your inspiration and staying open to new ideas and experiences. Watching a diverse range of films from different genres, countries, and eras provides fresh perspectives, while reading widely—from novels and short stories to poetry and non-fiction—broadens the narrative toolkit. Engaging in collaboration with other filmmakers, writers, and artists fosters the exchange of ideas and innovation. Experimentation is key; trying out new filmmaking techniques, genres, and styles can lead to unexpected creative breakthroughs. Attending film festivals, workshops, and industry events can provide valuable insights and networking opportunities. Remaining curious, embracing failure, and taking creative risks are essential parts of the process. Prioritizing self-care through activities like meditation, exercise, and hobbies helps maintain a healthy mind and body, essential for sustained creativity.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a writer, I find inspiration in the ordinary moments of everyday life, elevating the commonplace to the realm of the extraordinary. It’s in the quiet conversations over morning coffee, the fleeting glances exchanged between strangers on a crowded street, and the subtle nuances of human interaction that I discover the raw material for storytelling. By delving into the depths of the seemingly routine, I unearth the universal truths that bind us all together—the hopes, dreams, fears, and desires that shape our shared human experience. In my work, I seek to peel back the layers of the ordinary, revealing the extraordinary beauty and complexity that lies beneath. Through keen observation and a reverence for the small moments that make life rich, I strive to craft narratives that resonate deeply with audiences, inviting them to see the world through a new lens and find wonder in the seemingly mundane. As a director, I embrace the diversity of storytelling, always eager to explore new genres, themes, and mediums. I thrive on the challenge of adapting my vision to suit the unique essence of each project. I approach every opportunity with enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence, ensuring that each collaboration is a fulfilling and transformative experience for both myself and the audience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being part of an industry that is male dominated, having confidence in my skills and the determination to pursue a career in such an industry has helped me in my journey. Having confidence in yourself is half the battle won. Being open to learn new things from people around you is important. Sometimes you learn much more from people around you than you would at any school or university. Having general knowledge of all aspects and areas rather than just being knowledgeable in your area of expertise is recommended as this will help you be better and more successful in what you do as no one can mislead you with wrong information and you can make well informed decisions. If you had to take away one advise from this it would be to participate more, make yourself visible, hone your skills through every project you are a part of. Keep learning and exploring. These are the few things that have helped me in my journey
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma has provided me with valuable wisdom and has aided in maximizing my productivity. Some nuggets of wisdom that have helped me and that I would recommend are –
1) Four Interior Empires: Focus on balancing and nurturing your Mindset (thoughts), Heartset (emotions), Healthset (physical health), and Soulset (spiritual health) to achieve holistic success and fulfillment.
2) The Power of Solitude: Embrace quiet moments for deep thinking and self-reflection. Solitude helps you gain clarity, innovate, and connect with your true self.
3) Serve the World: Success is not just about personal achievements but also about contributing to the well-being of others. Use your talents and resources to make a positive impact on the world.
4) Small Daily Improvements: Incremental improvements over time lead to significant results. Focus on making small, consistent enhancements in your daily routines and practices.
