Meet Taylor Laws

We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Laws recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Taylor with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic was instilled at a young age thanks to my parents. My mom and dad taught me that nothing is earned and that you have to work hard to earn what you want in life. When I was about 13 (maybe younger) I started asking my mom and dad what I could do to earn money. I think my interest came from seeing my 16 year old sister start working and making money. At the time, my dad owned a dental practice in southern, Oregon. They would let me take on small tasks like assembling new paper charts, alphabetizing files, shredding papers, cleaning the bathrooms. I quickly became obsessed with the process of crossing out a completed task with my marker. I got my first job as soon as I could drive. I worked for a nurse practitioner throughout high school, accepted any babysitting gig, and signed up as a camp counselor during the summers. For a little while during nursing school, I worked 3 jobs because I just don’t like to sit around and apparently somehow made the time! Once my clinical rotations started I dialed it back to 2 jobs.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In high school, I spent a decent amount of time at the dermatologist office. I remember receiving a microdermabrasion from a nurse at the office and became fascinated by the branch of nursing in aesthetics. I already had my heart set on nursing school because of my passion to take care of people. With this newfound love for skincare my career was born.

Having always had acne prone skin, I know the toll that acne takes on self esteem and confidence. What I have learned is that people experience this same self doubt when they don’t feel like themselves. This can be because of wrinkles, volume loss, sun damage, etc.

I became an aesthetic nurse injector and skincare specialist for this reason: to help others enhance their natural beauty and feel confident in their skin.

When I moved from Southern Oregon to Arizona for school, I went on instagram and starting following nurse injectors in the area. One page that I came across was @aznurseinjector. I followed her, Skyler Soares, throughout nursing school and even messaged her a few times for advice asking how to dip my toes into the aesthetics field. When I graduated, Skyler happened to just start offering 1:1 trainings. I took a job at a hospital in labor & delivery because I knew how difficult aesthetic nursing can be to get into. While working in the hospital, I saved up to train with Skyler.

I went through the training and fell in love with Skyler + all things injectables. I didn’t know this at the time, but I was the first student she ever trained.

I applied to several medspas, despite their requirement of only hiring 2 year candidates, hoping the right one would notice my work ethic and give me the chance.

In the meantime, I messaged Skyler on the daily asking to shadow and learn more from her. After coming back for another training day, she offered me a job.. Best. Day. Ever.

Here I am, going on 3 years later! I have been blessed with the most amazing patients over the years. I have expanded my skills by becoming a licensed laser tech, a ZO Skincare Expert, and am training students of my own. In addition, I just started Nurse Practitioner School. The learning never stops!

Consultations are my favorite because I get to meet you, of course! My consultations are 100% catered to the individual and include a full facial exam with injectables, skincare, and treatments in mind. I specialize in a natural approach where, often, less is more!

We just brought in a Sciton BBL + MOXI laser and the before and afters are jaw dropping!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, determination and resilience are the qualities that got me to where I am today.

A lot of people judged me in nursing school when I would share my dream. Comments circled back to me like “that is not a real nurse.” To this day, some people still ask me why I went to nursing school if I am in the aesthetic business. Most don’t realize, state laws require you to be a nurse or advanced to perform injections.

With that, a lot of people in the business, unlike Skyler, were discouraging and said it’s practically impossible to get into.

My advice to anyone with this same passion is to stay positive and give it your all. I have had patients who are fellow nurses making the transition and I tell them to take their resume everywhere, apply to all places no matter the requirements. You just never know who is looking to expand and willing to invest in you!

If you’re looking to become certified in injectables, come train with me and we will get you on the road to success!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I surround myself with loved ones. I have two golden retrievers that ease any situation! I also find it helpful if I am overwhelmed by tasks to make a list in order of what needs to be done first and just tackle one at a time. I am big on self care and for me, a lot of that comes from traveling and experiencing new things. I think that a healthy work life balance is key. I have a motto that if there is something I want to do in this life and I’m able to do it now—then I’m going to do it or plan to do it asap because tomorrow is not guaranteed and tomorrow I may have bigger dreams.
