Meet Jason Ramsey

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Ramsey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.

Jason, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.

In a previous career, I had the opportunity to study communication and its relation to mood, decision-making, and project outcomes. At the time I had no idea how much this would help me in all aspects of life, but it did. I still apply many of these principals everyday at Bravadas. There were many things I learned in theory and then I was given a chance to use them practically in real-world situations. One of the most important things I learned was that in order to communicate effectively you have to first become good at active listening. Giving your full attention to the person speaking, and avoiding distractions is the first step to achieve this.. If the speaker knows your listening they tend to be open and share more. Once it’s my turn to talk I then try to focus on clear and concise messaging. Whether it’s a client or a vendor, everyone’s time is valuable. This should be a key factor when you are speaking. It’s also important to remember that the main goal is to understand and be understood. That leads me to one of my favorite saying about communication which is, be interested, not interesting.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I grew up in a family of farmers and educators. Initially, I chose the education path but during that journey, I found a love for retail and beauty. I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 20 years. During that time I’ve worked in management, marketing, operations, product development, crisis management, and business development. I’m currently the President of Bravadas Wigs and Hair Restoration. Our company has always pushed the limits of what traditional retail wig stores have been. We were the first concept in North America to have multiple locations under the same brand. We were also the only wig franchise in the country. Although we no longer do franchising our focus is still to grow the brand as much as possible in order to reach as many people as we can to help them with solutions to their hair loss. Our founder, Scott Stark, is a visionary who is comfortable thinking outside the box in order to grow the business and expand its footprint. We currently have two new concepts we are testing and are confident we can move both forward as we did with Bravadas. I also believe that concepts are only as good as the team that works on them, and with the help of Erica Jones, Jenny Lambert, and Katheryn Brown we have had one of the best years our company has ever had.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

If I could give anyone advice during the early stages of their journey I would start with communication. Specifically learning to be a good listener. The more you can learn to give your full attention to the person who is talking, the better equipped you’ll be to give an intelligent, thoughtful response. It’s just as important to be positive. Today’s world is filled with negativity but none of it will help you move forward toward your goals. Positive people attract other positive people, it doesn’t matter if it’s community partnerships, vendors, or clients. Lastly, I would advise to find something you are passionate about. It’s hard to build a business if you don’t love your work. Looking forward to the day ahead is one of the greatest gifts in your work and it can provide energy that you need when you need it most.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed I try to focus on completing one task at a time. Being an executive gets me pulled in several different directions at the same time. Although multitasking doesn’t bother me, it can sometimes be counterproductive when working on projects that require more focus. During those times I make a list of actions based on order of magnitude. This allows me to complete more pressing matters first and relieves some of the stress that can be overwhelming. Short walks during the workday are also essential to my mental health. Fresh air and deep breaths can work wonders.
