We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lucy Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lucy, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by practicing during my downtime, which keeps my skills sharp and ready for the next event. Teaching my workshops is another big part of it—it’s amazing how much I learn and get inspired by sharing knowledge with others. And of course, reading and studying keep me constantly fueled with new ideas and perspectives. It’s a fun and fulfilling cycle that keeps the creative sparks flying!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a first-generation female Korean florist based in Los Angeles, California, and I’ve been the owner and lead designer of b.ju Floral since 2020. I specialize in floral design for events, including weddings, private parties, and film. What excites me most about my work is how nature creates such incredible beauty, and I get to create inspiration from that every day. When I create a floral piece, I feel like I’m giving the flowers a second life, allowing them to tell a new story. It’s a truly special process that I’m passionate about. I’m also thrilled to be expanding my services, bringing more of this natural beauty to new events and projects.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey as a florist are passion, resilience, and a commitment to providing high-quality, expert skills and floral knowledge. Passion is what drives creativity and keeps you going, even on the toughest days. Resilience helps you navigate the ups and downs of running a business, especially in a bustling city like Los Angeles. And, of course, offering expert skills and knowledge ensures that every piece I create is crafted with care and professionalism.
For those just starting their journey, my advice is to never stop learning. Immerse yourself in every opportunity to hone your craft, whether through formal training, workshops, or simply experimenting on your own. Stay passionate about what you do, and don’t be afraid to push through challenges—they often lead to the most rewarding experiences. And above all, strive for excellence in your work; it’s the key to building a strong and lasting reputation.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My husband has been incredibly supportive and helpful throughout this journey. He’s always there to encourage me and keep me grounded, which has been essential in overcoming challenges. I’m also grateful for my fellow florist friends. They’ve played a huge role in helping me understand the business side of things, discussing innovative ideas, and being a reliable source of support and inspiration. It’s amazing to have a community that you can lean on and grow with!
