We were lucky to catch up with Heather Gill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, really appreciate your meeting with us today to talk about some particularly personal topics. It means a lot because so many in the community are going through circumstances where your insights and experience and lessons might help, so thank you so much in advance for sharing. The first question we have is about divorce and how you overcame divorce and didn’t allow the trauma of divorce to derail your vision for your life and career.
When life isn’t aligned and your spouse has decided they want out of the marriage, no amount of energy, love, or attention can change the situation. This is where I found myself in 2023. I was in a marriage that simply couldn’t be revived. Not only that, as I had time in our relationship, I found I had given of myself to a fault and had abandoned my own soul.
During the 8.5 years of marriage, I had taken up working in real estate. I started out learning about all the ways you can invest in real estate and eventually took all the required classes and got my real estate license. I really found my niche!
Being self employed and facing the life altering situation of a divorce is daunting, to say the least. Faced with uncertainty, I looked into all of my options, which included going back into corporate work. In times of uncertainty, I seek out counsel to get a bigger perspective. Thank God for my broker’s advice! Rick gave me the encouragement I needed and several solid tips for keeping my business moving forward. I was very grateful to have support from my broker, as well as family, friends, and colleagues during the divorce. It is true what they say, “Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.” (proverbs 11:14)
Filling my heart with faith, I kept my head down, working on my business as we proceeded with the divorce. There were good days and bad days. In 2023, I closed more transactions than I ever had and I reached my commission cap with my broker! I was also named Best Realtor in Carrollton for the second time! I have no doubt that when we make a decision and put our faith into action, life conspires favorably for us!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Professionally, I work as a REALTOR in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area, helping buyers, sellers, and investors with their real estate needs. Our industry is in transition at the moment and there ar changes that require more negotiation and attention on behalf of our clients. I welcome these changes to our industry. I feel that the requirements around compensation for agents will ultimately strengthen our value proposition and raise the professionalism in the industry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In 2018 I became a student of personal development and I came to believe that who you surround yourself with will impact your life, either positively or negatively. I was fortunate enough to join EXP realty and get in with a group of hungry entrepreneurs who were collaborating at a high level to win big in the game of life and business.
Every time we had our weekly mastermind, I filled up my audible account with titles to listen to, or added books to my Amazon cart. When I got serious about expanding my mind and my heart, things started to shift in my life. As I was invited into events, I gladly took up the invitation. I have participated in events with Tony Robbins, Michael Bernoff, and David Bayer. I also paid for personal coaching and mentoring, which further moved the needle in my mind and heart. By far, these types of investments in my own psycho/spiritual development have provided the biggest gains for me personally and professionally.
Overwhelm, burnout, stress, and anxiety are common emotions in everyday living. We all face these emotions from time to time. When faced with them I ask myself the question, “What is this emotional state telling me?” By taking the role of an observer of my emotional states it allows me to have more objectivity with my situation. This brings clarity and it lowers the volume of that emotional state, so to speak. From there I can engage with some good self care routines to help me get back to a peaceful state of mind. Some of my routines include walking, taking a nap, phoning a friend, journaling, meditating or praying. Another thing that helps is to check in with my body. Have I had enough water today? When was the last time I ate something? Being kind to yourself and taking some time to reset helps tremendously.
With all I have learned, I have 2 key pieces of advice to give to real estate professionals like myself. First of all, look for people who are working and winning at a higher level than you are and get into that circle. Those that are hungry for bigger life experiences and for greater success in their careers are the ones you want to associate with. As it has been said, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future…” Craig Groeschel
Secondly, seek out the road less traveled. In a world of conformity, it is tempting to take the same path forged by others. This is your life. This is your path. Trust your intuition! Walking through an alternative path for my inner healing journey has been exactly what I have needed and I am grateful I took the road less traveled.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Getting around the right people who are collaborating at a higher level has been so paramount to my personal and professional development. It would be an honor to connect with like-minded agents who want to grow. If you are an agent, and want to collaborate with me, just reach out!
