We recently connected with Adam Tilzer and have shared our conversation below.
Adam, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my love of music at a very young age, thankfully being exposed to a diverse pool of artists from different family members. It was inevitable I would learn to play an instrument and then the hunger for more just came naturally to me. After a few years with zero purpose in college, I knew I had to pursue an education in music in some form. This led me to audio school for music production and audio engineering. After some years working in this field it was actually a mentor, a very successful music producer who said I was also a producer. I hadn’t thought of myself as such, I was just trying to be the best engineer I could but he saw this truth in me. Thanks to him I found my purpose as a music producer and have been on this journey ever since.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a music producer, engineer, and musician out of Staten Island, NY. I’ve been working in the music industry since 2006 starting as an intern and working my way up to where I am now. I went freelance in 2017 and have been focusing on mainly producing ever since. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with an incredibly diverse, talented group of artists and musicians over these years which I feel is the main reason I’ve been successful in creating interesting and amazing music. At this point I’ve produced and released nearly 300 songs with many more in the works currently. A few highlights have been my Cult Classics tribute albums. In 2021 we released a Leonard Cohen tribute album and in 2024 we did one for David Bowie. These tribute albums were made up of all the artists I produce and a few special friends. Because they’re all so different and special, each song got a new and exciting voice.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel that coming from the band scene, especially leading an 8 person band gave me the skills to manage many different personalities and egos. You have to hear everyone in the room while still being able to choose the best answer to the problem, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. Another huge one is being able to be wrong. When I’m proven wrong in the creative world, I love it, it’s exciting. It means the great idea you had, turned out to have an even better possibility. Plus seeing someone else get excited because they had the solution is always fun.
Work ethic and personality will always be more useful than talent. If there are people to choose from for a project and one is more talented but incredibly difficult or just plainly, an asshole, I’ll always pick someone who is the better hang, the more accommodating, and the one who makes my life and job easier.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would say all the people I get to work with help me overcome my challenges. I work in a very collaborative way, I love the process of creating with others. Plus you always get to learn something new because everyone has at least one thing to teach you.
