Meet 5elect

We were lucky to catch up with 5elect recently and have shared our conversation below.

5elect, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.

“In hip-hop, it’s very common to have haters and naysayers. I’d like to think it doubled when I added the Christian label to it. Being in Christian hip-hop means combining two niche genres, and that brings criticism from all sides—those who dislike hip-hop, those who oppose Christianity, and even some Christians who believe hip-hop can’t be Christian.

Understanding this, it’s crucial that I surround myself with family. I’m lucky to have my mom, Kim Seaborn, and my sister, Moriah Seaborn, as label mates. This allows for a lot of collaboration with other creative minds. My dad, Robert Seaborn, Lindsey Seaborn, my wife, and my kids constantly remind us of our ultimate goal: to ‘Move The Gospel.’

A hip-hop family also encourages me beyond what any critic might say. There have been several times when Kemoy Music, Illustrate, or other members of the G-Life outreach team have pushed me to overcome my own doubts. Lastly, I overcome a lot of online haters by listening to my own words. Sometimes, I write a song through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, not realizing that the song is actually going to minister to me.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Cross Centered Records (CCR) is a Christian Hip-Hop record label based in Colorado Springs, CO. CCR was founded by Isaiah “5elect” Seaborn in 2010, with a mission to bring unbelievers into a cross-centered relationship with Christ, and encourage current believers to continue moving the gospel.

Recently, I released my second single entitled, “Choose Ur Destiny” which can be streamed here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/5elect/cyd/

Our next events will be serving our homeless communities through our “Concert on the Curb” series. For more details, on these events please visit Facebook.com/Crosscenteredrecords

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three skills I would encourage anyone to develop in Christian Hip-Hop are:

1. Compassion – It’s very easy to let your gifts become self-gratifying, leading to toxic traits. Compassion keeps you grounded and focused on serving others with your art.
2. Learn Every Aspect of the Business – I never thought I’d be producing my own instrumentals, shooting my own videos, or making my own website. Initially learning how to do all aspects yourself not only improves your quality but also helps you delegate tasks more effectively later on.
3. Be “That Guy” – In my city, there are only a handful of artists who support one another. I’ve always made it a point to be that guy—sharing other artists’ music, being the first one at the front of a concert, and cheering them on. Not just to gain support later on, but because I genuinely want to see others succeed. When you’re that person who constantly supports others, it creates a ripple effect. You build a stronger, more connected community, where artists feel encouraged and motivated. This kind of support also fosters a culture of collaboration rather than competition. In the long run, it strengthens the overall movement, allowing everyone to thrive together rather than struggling in isolation.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m always eager to collaborate with people who genuinely want to see others succeed. My ultimate goal is to “Move Tha Gospel” to those who have lost hope or need encouragement and I want to partner with anyone who has the same vision.
