We were lucky to catch up with John Volturo recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
As a former Chief Marketing Officer and an out member of the LGBTQ community, I’ve often been the only gay person in the room, particularly in executive settings. Early on, I felt isolated, as conversations often revolved around topics like sports, wives, and children—areas where I didn’t fit in. This made me feel like an outsider and, at times, an imposter.
But I knew I belonged. I reclaimed my voice by addressing this disconnect directly in a C-suite meeting, suggesting we find common ground that everyone could engage with. This simple act shifted the dynamics, not just of the meetings but of my sense of belonging.
I didn’t navigate this journey alone. I built relationships with influential colleagues, outperformed expectations, and sought external support through a Personal Board of Directors and my volunteer work in the LGBTQ community. These networks were crucial in helping me navigate challenges and thrive.
Growing up gay, I developed a deep empathy for those on less-traveled paths. This, combined with continuous learning and adaptability, gave me an edge. My unique perspective has allowed me to bring empathy, resilience, and creativity into my work, fostering innovation and inclusivity. In doing so, I’ve also challenged stereotypes, showing what a gay male executive can be.
My journey has been about more than survival—it’s been about creating change. By advocating for inclusivity and staying true to myself, I’ve helped build more inclusive spaces in every organization I’ve been a part of. Now, as an executive coach, I coach others to embrace their authentic selves and champion diversity within their teams.
Being the only gay or different person in the room can be challenging, but it’s also a chance to drive change and inspire others. Embrace your uniqueness, build strong networks, and trust in the power of your authentic self. Your presence can pave the way for a more inclusive future.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an Executive Coach and Leadership Development Architect, I specialize in elevating executives and their leadership teams to reach their highest potential. Drawing from my extensive experience as a former Chief Marketing Officer, where I contributed to over $1.5 billion in revenue growth across various sectors, I bring a deep understanding of the complexities of leadership at the highest levels. What excites me most about my work is its transformative impact on individual leaders and entire organizations. By focusing on holistic coaching, I help leaders unlock their full potential by aligning their personal and professional selves.
My unique approach is deeply rooted in my belief that true leadership starts with self-awareness and authenticity. I integrate tools like the Enneagram, Energy Leadership, and DISC assessments to help my clients gain a 360-degree view of themselves and their teams. My work isn’t about fixing what’s broken but amplifying what’s already a strength and finding new pathways to success. This unique approach is what sets my services apart and keeps my clients intrigued and interested.
One of the most special aspects of my work is running Leadership Circles, where I bring together small groups of leaders to foster mutual growth and learning. These circles create a powerful environment of shared wisdom and collective insight, enabling leaders to grow together in ways they might not have individually.
Right now, I’m also excited about my ongoing work with top companies like Abercrombie & Fitch and GlassDoor, where I’m helping to shape the next generation of leaders. This continuous collaboration with industry leaders reassures my clients and audience of my expertise and keeps me updated with the latest trends and challenges in the leadership landscape. Additionally, I’m working on my book, My Mind’s Journey Home: Leadership Lessons from my Brain Tumor, which will explore the profound leadership insights I gained during my personal health journey.
Beyond the coaching sessions, I stay connected with a broader audience through my LinkedIn newsletter, 6toSuccess, where I share vital ideas, tips, and tools that I work on with my C-suite clients. It’s a way to extend my reach and offer valuable insights to a broader community of leaders.
For anyone looking to take their leadership to the next level, whether through one-on-one coaching, Leadership Circles, or insightful content, my goal is to provide the tools and guidance needed to drive significant and lasting change. And if you’re ever in Palm Springs, consider staying at my Airbnb—a Spanish hacienda with a blue door where relaxation meets inspiration.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three qualities that have had the greatest impact on my journey are resilience, empathy, and strategic thinking. Each has played a crucial role in shaping my career and personal life, enabling me to navigate challenges and drive meaningful change.
1. Resilience: My journey, both professionally and personally, has been filled with challenges—from being the only gay person in the room during high-level executive meetings to overcoming significant health battles. Resilience has been my cornerstone, allowing me to push through adversity and come out stronger on the other side. For those early in their journey, I advise embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Cultivate a mindset that views setbacks as temporary and a stepping stone to learning and significant achievements. Building resilience is about maintaining a long-term vision, even when the short term feels overwhelming—and it will feel overwhelming at times.
2. Empathy: Growing up gay and navigating spaces where I often felt like an outsider has given me a deep understanding of others who walk a different path. Empathy has allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level, whether in leadership roles, coaching sessions, or everyday interactions. It’s a powerful tool for building trust, fostering inclusive environments, and leading with authenticity. For those looking for a new role or starting out, I recommend adopting the mindset that you are hiring your boss. Ask yourself what criteria the boss needs to meet to be a boss you can learn and grow from. And, when you’re in the role, actively listen to others and seek to understand their perspectives, especially those different from your own. Empathy is a skill that can be developed through conscious effort and is invaluable in both professional and personal relationships.
3. Strategic Thinking: As a former Chief Marketing Officer and now as an Executive Coach, Strategic Thinking has been essential in driving results, whether for a company’s bottom line or an individual’s personal growth. It’s about seeing the big picture, anticipating challenges, and making decisions that align with long-term goals. For those early in their careers, focus on developing your ability to think critically and plan ahead. Surround yourself with mentors who can guide you, and always be curious—about your industry, your role, and the world around you. The more you understand the larger context, the better you’ll be at adapting and making strategic decisions that propel you forward.
My Advice for Early Career Professionals: To develop the qualities I mentioned above, start by setting clear, long-term goals that inspire you. Persistence through challenges in pursuit of these goals builds resilience. Empathy grows when you engage with diverse groups and actively listen to their experiences. Strategic Thinking can be honed by seeking out mentors, continuously learning, and always keeping the big picture in mind.
Above all, remember that your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace your authenticity, leverage your unique experiences, and don’t be afraid to chart your path. It’s never been more possible than in this moment. These qualities will help you succeed and enable you to make a meaningful impact in the world around you.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I draw enthusiasm and energy from working with others. I am eager to collaborate with individuals and organizations who are passionate about leadership development and creating impactful, one-to-one, and one-to-many change. My work thrives on partnerships with those equally committed to empowering leaders and fostering environments conducive to personal and organizational growth. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to extend my voice to a greater audience.
Who I’m Looking to Collaborate With:
Forward-Thinking Organizations: I’m particularly interested in working with companies that are eager to invest in their leadership teams, especially those navigating transitions or seeking to break down silos. Companies that value belonging and human potential naturally fit my approach. These principles are foundational to strong leadership.
Fellow Coaches and Consultants: I want to collaborate with other coaches, consultants, and thought leaders who bring complementary skills and perspectives. Whether co-facilitating workshops, developing new leadership programs, or exploring innovative coaching methodologies, I value partnerships that push boundaries and explore new frontiers in leadership development.
Nonprofits and Advocacy Groups: Given my personal and professional commitment to the LGBTQ community, I also prioritize partnering with nonprofits and advocacy groups on initiatives that support underrepresented communities, particularly in leadership roles.
