We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katrina Niswander a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
As an adult it’s been a bit of a journey. There are three things that have been the most valuable for me when it comes to developing my confidence and self-esteem and landing in the good place that I am today. First of all: prioritizing self-care. The more I show myself that I am valuable and important and that my health and wellness is important, the more I truly believe it. Secondly: learning anything and everything I can about my work and my passions; adopting what feels right for me and throwing away anything that does not! Third: I’ve embraced more of what I call artful living. The idea is to move through the world with the authenticity, presence, confidence, curiosity, and creativity of a small child. It’s my attempt to embrace the opportunities for beauty and adventure in each day. It feels so true to my soul and gives me a real lust for life and boost of confidence each day!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have quite a few passions! I’m a self love and self worth focused life coach, and interior design consultant. I’m also a classically trained, internationally exhibiting fine artist! I’m a huge nerd about every aspect of my work and love talking psychology, design, and art! I have a real fascination with the feeling of home, what we choose to surround ourselves with and what we leave behind. In my mixed media paintings on found photographs I explore the complexities of time, memory, and nostalgia in an intuitive playful manner. I expand on that creative calling and passion for the power of aesthetics through my design and coaching work. Spreading the idea of “Living Artfully,” I aim to help others live more beautiful, creative, juicy lives by embracing the power of art, design, and artful living practices as self care.
You can find my artwork on social media and on my website, where I also share information about my services!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Passion & Tenacity: If I didn’t have a true passion for my interests, I would never have been able to put in the time, effort, and unpaid labor necessary to learn all I could, practice, pivot, etc. and get where I am today. There have been plenty of ups and downs but giving up on my dreams has never been an option.
2. Authenticity: staying true to ourselves is the only way.
3. Finding teachers and Expanders to show you your options: when you’re creating your own career path it can be hard. There is no blueprint, no set of directions on how to get where you want to be. You have to find your own way. One very helpful practice is to look for people who have bits and pieces of what you aim to accomplish, or who’s careers or trajectories inspire you, and to find seeds of your path within theirs. Sometimes we can find mentors, which can be incredibly valuable, but we can also glean knowledge from afar from our inspirations! Over time we can find our own way by knitting together bits and pieces of others experience and knowledge and combining it with our own! ( I learned this valuable idea from the Lacy Phillips: To Be Magnetic Program!)

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always excited to collaborate and connect with my people! I’ve been exploring blogging with an artful living focus on my website. For a re-occurring project on this blog I create rooms inspired by singular art pieces: if you’re an artist who is interested, please reach out! I’m always excited about new ways to connect and share in all areas of my work. Please reach out if you have any ideas!
