We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cynthia Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I thank both my parents for my work ethic. They’ve always been such hardworking in everything they’ve done, and have inspired me since I started working at the age of 17.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Originally from Mexico, but raised in the United States since I was 2 years old. An artist enthusiast and crafter since my teens, I officially began my preserved flower art business in late 2021 following a deep-dive of discovery when trying to safeguard our own wedding bouquet against the ravages of time. What began as focused aim and then a hobby soon bloomed into a profession as I discovered all the myriad techniques to preserve and then display flowers. From simply air drying and hanging, to pressing, encasing in silica gel, and epoxy resin I learned to maintain a better quality, shape, and color of floral subjects. Now, not only does my business, Press Love Wildflowers, preserve special bouquets with ease, the business has expanded to include handmade products such as coasters, wine corks, jewelry, bookmarks and more – all made with real flowers!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three of my top skills and qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey is that, I have always been self-motivated and hardworking individual. This has helped me stay consistent with my business and investing my time and passion into it.
My creative side, love and appreciation for art.
And third quality is patience. This job and and owning your own business is not as simple, so it takes a lot of patience to be able to manage all the ups and down of it.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest challenge I’m facing with right now is time. Doing this all on my own, the products, accounting, marketing, etc., I sometimes fall behind on projects that I wish to finish, or trying to get ahead with products so that I can have enough for upcoming markets and to stock the 3 local shops I collaborate with.
Overcoming this challenge would be to eventually start actually hiring someone that can help me with minor projects. As of now, I’m getting help from my husband in accounting, and just recently, my sister has helped with making some of the products and pressing flowers!
