Meet Sam Dever

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sam Dever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

My work ethic came earlier in my youth with basketball. I never was the most talented or skilled player but I was always one of the most hard working players.

I also was extremely dedicated to improving. Outside of the basketball season I would go to camps, play in other leagues and spend countless hours in the gym performing drills and improving my game. I became obsessed, even carrying my basketball everyday to school so I was always prepared to practice.

As I got older, I would also start to incorporate early morning weight lifting sessions to enhance my body and make me a physically stronger player.

I didn’t play much in my beginning years, but over time, I worked my way up to a starting position in High School and even played two years at the Junior College level.

After my basketball days were done, I carried over that work ethic to everything I have ever done. It’s great to have talent but if the talent has no work ethic or drive, it is useless.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a podcast host, multimedia producer, actor, artist and speaker in Los Angeles, CA.

I’ve been in LA for over 6 years and produce/host a podcast called “The Sam Dever Podcast” which is a long form conversation featuring guests from a variety of backgrounds who live and think “outside the box.”

I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with influential actors, filmmakers, entrepreneurs and many other creative pioneers in their respective industries to discuss how they have overcome obstacles and reached new heights in their fields.

Many of our conversations go deep and are philosophical exploring the different layers of humanity and finding out what makes us tick.

Living in a city like Los Angeles and Las Vegas prior, it’s been a gift to meet and work with so many amazing and creative people from so many different walks of life.

The podcast is available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcast and you can learn more at www.TheSamDeverPodcast.com

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important qualities that have been the most impactful on my journey have been hard work, enthusiasm and persistence.

I think the best advice on how one can improve these qualities is to do things you are genuinely interested in.

By doing so, you are naturally going to be enthusiastic about what you are doing. You are also going to want to improve at it and be the best you can be, causing you to work hard. Finally, you are not going to want to quit because you enjoy it and will have the will to keep going, this is where persistence comes into play.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents ever did for me was to support me being myself and to help me create my own path in life.

I left where I am from in Illinois shortly after college graduation in 2009 to move out West. Since then, I have only gotten to see my parents maybe 1-2 times a year on average.

This has been tough and it gets harder as I get older.

However, me leaving home to seek out new adventures and expand my journey of self discovery has been pivotal for my personal and artistic development.

I’ve been beyond blessed to meet so many incredible people, see so many amazing places and have numerous creative experiences.

I highly respect and love them for giving me the space to find myself and to explore what the world has to offer.
