We recently connected with Precious Rutlin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Precious , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my life lessons and being observant of what was happening to those around me. I wanted to ensure that what happened to them didn’t happen to me if at all possible. I have always been a determined person. When I say I want to do something, I figure out a way to get it done.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Going from being known as the “hair growth specialist” to being the ‘one stop shop” bookkeeper for small businesses was a 180 degree turn in my career.
Being in the entrepreneur space for over a decade has taught me many lessons including long gone are days of being a one wo(MAN) show if you want your business to survive. Over the years I had to pivot my services based on my life experiences, what my business data showed me and what the market demanded at the time.
In the midst of me figuring out the next chapter of my life after ending my hair loss restoration business of 10 years, I had to learn how to not stress over things that will not affect my business bottom line.
While I could have been resentful about closing my hair business, I choose to take a step back and lay everything out on the table to see how I could best serve others and still experience the JOY of entrepreneurship. After looking over all my education, certifications, and skills, my spirit led me to tap into more of my administrator capacity to support business owners.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that were most impactful in my journey was having great customer service skills, understanding that consistent cash flow is the only way you will stay in business and knowing how separate my business from my personal life.
For someone who is early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve these skills, I recommend getting clarity on who you want to serve in the market place. Talk to the people you desire to work with and build genuine relationships with them. Understand that your services are not for everyone. This will cause you to focus on dream client and solve their problem.
Develop your plan in how you will bring cash into your business. The best way to do that is to reverse engineer meaning write out how much money you want to make then work backwards to figure out the services you can offer that will bring you the amount you desire. Statistics shows that there are 32.5 million small businesses in US and of that 20% fail within the first two years opening their business. You MUST have a cash flow financial plan to avoid being a part of the statistics.
At the end of the day, remember your WHY… Why did you start your business in the first place? This will help you to keep your head in the game when life starts lifyn. Remember you are a business owner now and you can’t shut your business down every time life throws you big blows. If that was the case, none of the well-known businesses would exist today.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I am a woman of faith and the book that has played an important role in my development is the bible. Some of the most valuable teaching are learned from it was to use what I already had to sell, pay off my creditors and live off the rest (the Widows Olive Oil 2 Kings 4); learning to not get myself into to debt (Romans 13:8) and tithe a tenth of my income (Leviticus 27:30).
