We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Brunner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
Sarah: We both quit our day jobs to pursue music – so we were both banking on ourselves to succeed in music. From here, we continued to say yes to opportunities even if there was more risk involved, like touring across the country for 4 months. These 4 months brought us a lot of the opportunities that led to our recent album release. We continue to try new things in every avenue of music — marketing, merch, shows, because we’ve learned that luck and opportunity can come from anywhere and when you least expect it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Tyler: I truly feel like I have the best job in the world. I certainly don’t have the kind notoriety or clout that a cover-of-the-Rolling Stone rock star has, but I get to make a living writing and performing music day in and day out. I knew from an early age that If I could tap into my passion for music and somehow turn it into a craft that I could maintain a living wage from, I could possibly achieve some sort of fulfillment in life that we all so desperately crave from the time we are young adults. And you know what, I’m making it happen and it’s simply the fricken best! When I’m not performing alone at wineries, breweries, or your local watering hole, I’m putting all my efforts into my Folksy-Americana Duo “The Hipocrats”. We just released our first Full Length Studio Album “Friend Ship Joyride” and are eagerly presenting it as the soundtrack to our lives. We are currently playing shows locally and have some regional touring planned in hopes of getting more ears on the project. Hopefully, you can find at least one of the 10 songs on the album to be a small light in your life. Our gift to you!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Sarah: Perseverance, curiosity, and organizational skills. Something I’ve learned in the last 3 years is the most talented person in the world isn’t guaranteed success – developing and utilizing perseverance has been one of the most important components in our 3 years as a band. Of course curiosity lends a hand in and around the musical components of being in a band – writing, collaborating, etc, but also in people. Staying curious can truly lead to opportunity, and it can open our hearts to inspiration. And lastly, organizational skills – sometimes the business side of things isn’t the “fun” part but staying organized is something we thank ourselves for in the long run.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Tyler: The biggest challenge we face is lack of awareness of our music — everyone has access to home recordings, distribution sites, social media, etc. While it’s a beautiful thing to have greater access to putting music and content in the world, it also creates more competition and can lessen the chances of discovery. As music fans, first and foremost, we enjoy the music that we write and release — the obstacle is getting in front people, which is why we play so many live shows and tour so much. We utilize the internet as much as we can, so our fans can connect to us on a more personal level. We are confident that leveraging our persistence and modern day tools that we have available to us will allow us to make more music and fuel this creative project we both have!
