Meet J.c. King

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful J.c. King a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

J.C., we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I have always bet on myself and my ability to make room for me. I have been doubted and discounted for most of my life but still, with my unwavering faith in God and in myself? All seems to be firing on all cylinders. I also make sure to never allow outside influences to hinder whatever it is that I am doing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Well, of course my name is J.C. King but you can call me Jon. It makes everything run a bit more smoothly. I am an author of several collections of poetry and short stories, all of which are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I love writing with a deep fiery passion; I have been writing since I was about 11 or 12 and to finally accomplish my goal of being published? It is sort of surreal and to be expected. Like I never thought that I would have anyone support my work but as it turns out, people really gravitate towards original ideas and different perspectives regarding everyday life situations.

But more than just writing, I am a social media manager for a faith-based organization. And I believe working with this group has also brought me closer to God and allowed me to fully eliminate any doubt or questions about my purpose in life. Like I even just recently launched an online store which should’ve been opened years ago but due to fear and questioning God’s mission, it never happened. Divine timing I think they call it.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Discipline. Faith. Patience. All three of these played their role very well. All have worked together equally while I have honed these traits separately. I never lost sight of the goal even when I had hiccups or obstacles in the road and I’ve gone through quite a lot in life. But still, I have overcome them all. It is amazing what five years can do to a person who’s had an invasive procedure which required him to re-learn all basic skills

For the folks early in their journey? I think it is best if you figure out what you want for your life, first and foremost. After doing so, you will be able to move forward knowing that you have a goal in mind and then examine what’s required to achieve that goal. I needed to develop discipline in my writing career which meant that I had to focus on what I wanted and needed to do in order to become a better writer. I read more books regardless of genre, I read them cover to cover. I wrote consistently. I also had to be patient with practice everyday because even if I didn’t feel like doing anything or I scribbled gibberish on some random notebook page that didn’t make any sense, it still had to get done because I knew what I wanted for myself and all of it is coming to fruition. As for faith? Without it no one will get anywhere in life. You have to have faith in your ability so that you will improve.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I am overwhelmed I resort to old habits that made me happy as a kid. I listen to music and watch cartoons. I even watch old movies. It may not be the healthiest way to do things but during this time, nothing seems to bother me and I can actually relax and enjoy my favorite past time. In doing so, reflection begins and sometimes, I realize that I may be overracting, so I go back to the drawing board and try again.

I would advise many to do what makes them feel relaxed and at ease when they’re overwhelmed. Take breaks when necessary. Walk away from tasks that are too taxing regardless of deadlines. Sometimes taking a nap or eating a little snack will remedy the situation but every person is different and we all handle our stressors differently. So do your best to identify what has you overwhelmed and respond accordingly.
