Meet Tiffany Wu

We recently connected with Tiffany Wu and have shared our conversation below.

Tiffany, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

My self-discipline stems from my constant drive to absorb new information and engage in new activities. I thrive on challenges because they provide opportunities for learning and self-improvement. I enjoy the sense of progress that comes with discovering and mastering something new.

I also find the structure essential, which is why I appreciate deadlines and schedules. Being goal-oriented, self-discipline is crucial to achieving my objectives. For instance, I consistently workout 2-3 days a week, demonstrating my commitment to maintaining a routine. Additionally, I excel in time management, ensuring that I efficiently balance my various responsibilities and pursuits.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a narrative and visual effects producer with a lifelong passion for films. I have always been captivated by stories with rich character journeys and fascinated by extraordinary events happening to ordinary people. This love for films set me on a path to start interning at a VFX company in San Francisco back in the early 2000s, and since then, I have been in the film business for over two decades.

Throughout my career, I have been involved in the creation of several blockbuster films. My bilingual ability has allowed me to work overseas, involving myself in multiple international co-productions and diverse environments.

However, I have a deep desire to find my voice and focus on telling smaller, more intimate stories about life. After a 20-year career in Visual Effects, I decided to take two years off to attend the American Film Institute as a producing fellow, with an expected graduation in 2024. With my extensive knowledge in development, physical production, and post-production, I stand out as a producer who understands the full scope of production from beginning to end, adeptly transforming concepts from script to screen. My expertise lies in orchestrating seamless productions, navigating challenges with a calm demeanor, decisiveness, and a creative mindset. I am incredibly excited and passionate about creating and producing films that have a global impact and touch people’s hearts.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Open-Mindedness: Being able to understand everyone’s point of view and see different perspectives is crucial, no matter where I am in the hierarchy. Putting myself in other people’s shoes allows me to see the bigger picture and approach situations from various angles.

Communication: Effective communication is key to success. Listening is a vital part of communication. Being able to listen, be honest, and transparent are essential components. It’s important to celebrate the contributions of others and ensure everyone feels heard and valued.

Remaining Calm During Crisis: This is a skill that has developed over time through experience. It took me a long time to cultivate this ability, but I have reached a point where I am the calmest when things are the most chaotic. I realized that not remaining calm can transmit negative energy to the crew and others, which can cause more harm. Maintaining composure is a crucial skill that I am grateful to possess.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

In this day and age, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with everything moving at a fast pace—technology advancements, the post-COVID world, and numerous daily tasks can quickly lead to feeling overloaded. When I feel overwhelmed, I employ a few strategies to regain control and find balance.

Firstly, I write down the things I want to focus on. Creating a to-do list helps me organize my thoughts and tasks. I prioritize the items on the list, identifying what needs immediate attention and what can wait. This helps me manage my workload more effectively and reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed by breaking down tasks into manageable steps.

Secondly, I ensure to schedule some “me time” each day. Blocking out a few hours for myself is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Whether it’s meditating, going to the gym, or simply watching my favorite movie or TV show, having this personal time allows me to unwind and recharge.

Additionally, I make it a point to take care of my physical health. Eating well and enjoying my favorite treats, like boba tea, can be a comforting and grounding experience. Proper nutrition and occasional indulgences contribute to my overall well-being.
