Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Gardner Antista. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sarah , so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Working with a non-profit in the Middle East for three years changed my life. Working with so many different kinds of people from all different walks of life made me realize that, at the end of the day, we are all doing life for the first time, and we are all trying to figure it out. Learning to speak Arabic was quite a humbling experience, but gaining the language and helped me to bridge cross-culturally with others who might have grown up differently to me. To this day, I love learning and am always curious about the people around me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an actor, but I also work in the non-profit world, and have worked with few different organizations related to peace-building, women’s empowerment, and Middle Eastern culture. I am passionate about creating, in whatever context that may arise. I recently filmed a short film that has Black Mirror vibes, and I love singing and playing acoustic guitar on the side. You might even catch me on a random Saturday making the worlds best brownies (listen, I don’t make the rules).
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel like the biggest things that I am (still) learning are:
1) Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Ever.
2) Community is everything, choose to be surrounded by good people.
3) Find ways to create, even if you aren’t making money doing it.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Body Keeps the Score. If you haven’t read it, I feel like it should be required reading. Learning how to engage with and find peace in our bodies is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself.
