We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angela Ying. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angela below.
Angela, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I have often found myself as the only woman or minority in the workplace or at events and other situations, especially when I used to work in the music industry. Over the years, I’ve realized that staying true to yourself, not caring what others may think, and building your personal support circle is the key to being effective and successful, even if you are the only one in the room that looks like you. When you stop worrying about what everyone else around you may think and instead, focus on how to better yourself, that’s when you can be your best self and succeed. Success looks different to everyone, and you are the only one who can define what success looks like to you.
You may be underestimated or even looked down upon because of the way you look or dress, or because what you’re doing for a career is not the social norm or a “reputable” career. That’s okay. If you take on each day with a confident mindset, hold yourself accountable, focus on your goals, and treat others with respect and compassion, people will naturally gravitate towards you. They’ll be drawn to you and won’t care that you don’t look like everyone else in the room. If they aren’t accepting of you, then that’s okay, too. You can’t please everyone, and you can’t make everyone like you. Take care of yourself and lean on your personal support circle when things get hard. And most importantly, remember that your happiness is the ultimate definition of success and effectiveness.
If you’re hesitant to start something because you’re afraid that you may be the only one in the room that looks like you, I encourage you to push those reservations aside and just do it. You never know what could happen. And who knows, you may inspire someone else to take that leap of faith when they see someone like you that stands out from the crowd.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the founder and owner of Filling Earthy, a mobile refillery in the Las Vegas valley. I started the business in 2022 to make sustainable living more accessible in Southern Nevada and officially launched it in February 2023. Filling Earthy has pop-ups at coffee shops, plant shops, and outdoor markets to provide low-waste products and refill options to the Las Vegas community.
A refillery helps reduce waste by encouraging people to reuse the containers that they already own and fill up on nontoxic, cruelty-free household and body products. The hope is that Filling Earthy will raise awareness on the amount of waste created in our daily lives and inspire the community to make more sustainable and eco-friendly choices.
I work with amazing small businesses that partner with me to make refilling possible. All refill partners offer a closed-loop system, which means our partners take back the bags or containers their products come in. They then sanitize and reuse those bags or containers, thus keeping things out of the landfills!
We are gearing up for market season and recently added stain remover to our refill station as well as a room and body spray gift set. We hope to add more items to our refill station in the near future and continue to grow and expand in the Las Vegas valley!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think the three qualities that have been the most impactful in my journey is hard work, passion, and determination. It’s not easy being a small business owner, and you really have to care about what you do to make progress. Being a small business owner often means you’re doing everything from social media, to operations, to accounting. As long as you are willing to learn and set your mind to it, you can do it. Set realistic goals for yourself and keep track of your accomplishments. You’re doing better than you think!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love hearing from other refilleries and sustainable businesses! As a mobile refillery, space is limited and I’m not able to carry every product I want, but I’m open to connecting. If you are a small business that creates nontoxic, cruelty-free, and plastic-free products (and a closed-loop system if you want to be a refill partner!), feel free to shoot me a message on Instagram at @fillingearthy.
If you own a small business in Las Vegas and would like to host Filling Earthy for a pop-up, I’d love to hear from you! Please send me a message on Instagram at @fillingearthy.
