Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cheryl Holling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cheryl, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I believe that some people know their purpose from a very early age and others, such as myself, refine it as they mature.
I’ve always wanted to use my voice and talents to communicate, entertain and educate but it’s taken me years from my early days in radio, on-camera work, and then to voiceover, to discover my love for and passion in podcasting.
This medium is allowing me to take my love of storytelling and the human voice, to create compelling content that draws on all of my life experience while presenting my guests own intriguing stories.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I mentioned that I’m passionate about podcasting as I’m eternally curious in hearing about and telling people’s stories.
In March of 2020 as Covid-19 was hitting the United States, I pivoted on another podcast idea that I sat on for over 5 years. I knew that our world was reeling with fear and I not only wanted to hear messages of hope, but I wanted to share them as well. I thought “if not now then when” and thus ’19Stories: from fear to Hope was born.’
19Stories is about women and men working in various creative endeavors. We have intriguing conversations about the successes, challenges, and fears they’ve faced and what they did to press-through their fear, (Covid related, professionally, or otherwise), to regain their own sense of purpose and hope. Oh, and we laugh…a lot!
I’ve interviewed some of the most stellar talent in voiceover, music and broadcasting as well as authors, speakers and coaches.
I’m incredibly grateful that these stories have resonated with folks and been recognized with a 2023, 2022 and 2021 SOVAS Award Nominations for Best Podcast – Producer.
My newest baby podcast ‘The Voice Kitchen: where recipes and voice talent blend!’ was launched in November 2023 right before Thanksgiving.
In each episode, I invite a talented voice actor into the Kitchen to share their favorite recipe, while also delving into the origins, significance and the meaning it holds for them. From savory soups to sweet desserts, this podcast has something for everyone. Whether the listener is a seasoned chef or just starting out in the kitchen, this podcast will hopefully leave people feeling inspired to try some of these recipes for themselves and hungry to tune in for more delicious recipes and conversations!
Given I am a solo producer of both of my podcasts, and all of my episodes, ‘The Voice Kitchen’ has been on the back burner a bit, (no pun intended), however I’m looking to release new episodes towards the end of summer. Speaking of which, if any of your readers are voice actors and have a favorite recipe they like to prepare, they are welcome to join me as a guest in the kitchen.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
While my answers may not top the list in most business curriculums, I’ve found the following to be true:
Resilience
Integrity
Resourcefulness
And I’ll throw in a fourth for good measure: Humor
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
For the past three years, I’ve co-moderated a room in Clubhouse called ‘Voices in Podcasting’ where myself and two fellow podcasters and voice talent, discuss podcasting, voiceover and everything in between.
We refer to V.I.P. as a consortium of people who podcast. We ALWAYS have a blast while sharing info about the biz, offering tidbits and takeaways and a safe space for people to vent in a positive way.
I have a vision for taking this to the next level with its own podcast, in print and online and yet it isn’t something I’m able to do on my own. My big sized dream requires equity, time, effort and energy; of which I only have so much of right now.
If what I’ve shared sounds intriguing to a benefactor that might be reading this, then I’d welcome a conversation.
