Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Liz Barbosa Sanchez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Liz, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I like to believe that I get my work ethic from my mom and my family. The fact that she was able to leave her home country and everything she knew to migrate to the United States, and work in construction—a field dominated by men—in the extreme hot Arizona summers, where the pay was minimal and the working conditions for a woman were far from ideal, is something I deeply admire and respect. My mom would leave early in the morning and come home late in the afternoon, yet she still had the energy to be a mother to my brother and me. Witnessing her perseverance instilled in me a strong work ethic.
Moreover, the majority of my family has migrated from Mexico to the U.S., and seeing how hard they work and how far they have come has been incredibly inspiring. I grew up with a fear of the future and uncertainty due to my immigration status, unsure of what my future would hold. My mom always encouraged me to do well in school and set ambitious goals, giving me the confidence to believe I could be anything I wanted. Once I realized that setting goals and working towards them could lead to accomplishment, I adopted this mindset. It hasn’t been easy, and there are times of discouragement, but I remember how hard my mom worked for my brother and me. As we say in my Mexican household, “me pongo las pilas” (“I get to work”).
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a licensed hairstylist based in Peoria, Arizona. I specialize in brunette and blonde balayage. My goal is to give my clients their dream hair that fits their lifestyle, so they can love every stage of its growth. I enjoy creating content that showcases my clients, featuring before-and-after transformations and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the life of a hairstylist. Additionally, I produce beauty and lifestyle content, sharing my passion for these areas.
This year, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with various hair, beauty, and lifestyle brands, creating content with products I already love. I feel incredibly blessed to work in my dream job, making women feel beautiful with their hair while also creating content for brands I adore. Combining these two passions has been truly amazing.
I am always accepting new clients. If you’re looking for a new hairstylist, please visit the link in my bio to request a hair consultation and achieve your hair goals.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Focus on your specialty: As a hairstylist, there are many areas you can focus on—color, haircuts, waxing, etc.—but when I began specializing in color, specifically balayage, my ideal clients started booking. My hair color technique improved, and I no longer felt burned out. I felt like an expert, confident in educating my clients during their appointments on how to care for their hair and more. Instead of pressuring myself to do everything just because that’s what we’re taught, I chose an area I love. Now, I have my ideal clients because they trust me to deliver the balayage they want.
Self-discipline: As a new small business owner, finding a routine or schedule that works for you can be challenging, but once you establish it, it greatly benefits both you and your business. I like to plan out my week and month in advance, creating a prep routine that sets me up for success and keeps my hair and content creation businesses running smoothly.
Always being open to change: As an entrepreneur, your mind is constantly working, and you always want the best for your business. You may come up with ideas that you believe are great and invest a lot of effort, only to be disappointed when the results don’t meet your expectations. In those moments, you can either let it hold you back or change your attitude and be open to trying something new. This wasn’t easy to understand—it took a lot of self-development—but once I became open to change, I found much more peace in my business. I know that as long as I work hard and have good intentions, my business will thrive, and both God and the universe will ensure it works out.
In this age of technology, where we can see everyone’s lives and accomplishments, please don’t compare your journey to others. Comparison is the thief of the present and the joy you’ll find in every stage of your business, career, and life. Remember why you started! It won’t be easy, but as long as you stay focused, don’t give up, and figure out what works for you and your business, everything will work out.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
As a Mexican immigrant living in the U.S., my parents taught me that the values of ambition, drive, and work ethic are truly priceless. They emphasized that in a country where opportunities are endless, it’s these qualities that set you apart and propel you toward success. They showed me that while circumstances may be challenging, it’s our determination and perseverance that open doors and create our own opportunities. Their lessons have been the foundation of my journey, instilling in me the belief that with hard work and unwavering ambition, I can achieve anything in this land of possibilities.
