We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hope Collie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Hope with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Where did my work ethic from? Well, it started by watching and learning from my mother. My mom had me when she was really young and she instilled in me the value of creating a stable environment for me. Having adversity and different challenges in your life can not and should not define who a person can become. At times, my mother worked two jobs in order to provide for her family.
So, seeing this left a positive influence on me. I believe in stability. I am a firm believer in being a responsible and reliable whether if I’m working for a company or being a business owner. I have to be dependable and put the time into whatever I’m doing in order to see the best results. These traits tie into being an effective communicator. Communication is key and a smile goes a long way when dealing people.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Professionally, I’m a flight attendant. And, it has been a wonderful career for me. The flexibility is great. It allows me to do other things if I choose to. It gives me access to travel and see exciting cities and countries. I meet interesting people and everyone has a story. So, it’s nice to engage in conversation with people.
In addition to flying, I also do charity work. I give my time at back to school giveaways, women shelters, and food donations centers.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities, skills, areas of knowledge that were impactful on my journey. One would be perseverance. Putting in hard work, believing in myself, and not giving up. Even if it means I have to try and try again to reach my goal. Secondly, being reliable and prompt. Showing up when you’re supposed to. Keeping your word. And, be on time. Lastly, being a good communicator and listener. Showing empathy when dealing with people. Understand other’s point of view.
For those who are just beginning and/or are early in their journey I would tell them to continue to believe in themselves. Don’t give up even if they feel defeated. Because, it gets better.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth for me is to not stress myself out over things that I can’t control. Because, it is out of my hands.
