Meet Christa Joy Spaeth

We recently connected with Christa Joy Spaeth and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Christa Joy, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

Almost three years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night and heard loudly in my spirit, “Help the Hurting!” I was shaking, it was so impactful. In that moment, I knew that I needed to resign from my 24-year long career as a successful dietitian for a large food manufacturing company. I also knew at that moment that I was not to look for other work until I left the company. With great prayer and my husband backing me up, I handed in my two-month notice. It wasn’t an easy step, it was a huge step of faith, one that led me closer to the purpose God had for me which is provide hope and encouragement to others through Christ.
What fostered this quality? I was raised by parents who were risk takers. They both grew up poor and I believe that spurred them on to take risks to improve their lifestyle, get out of debt, and improve their overall wellbeing. Their sense of risk taking and adventure into new and unusual avenues imprinted on me at an early age.
It wasn’t unusual for me to try new things throughout the years from various types of embroidery, riding a motorcycle to Sturgis, traveling to six continents to being a volunteer running coach. With that said, outside of running a marathon at the age of 40, which was a little crazy as I only started running at age 38, I didn’t do anything super risky until that day three years ago.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

About five months after I left my corporate job, I founded Christa Joy Ministries, LLC. I felt the Lord was calling me to have three arms to my ministry although I didn’t know they would be initially. I now know that the arms include: Publishing, Podcasting, and Mentoring ladies who want to start their own ministry. Today, I have published two books I have authored; I am the host of two podcasts; and I write daily encouragements on social media platforms, mostly InstaGram. My journey over the past three years has been one full of leaps of faith. These years have been the sweetest and most rewarding as well as the toughest years of my career. Many tears have been shed wondering if I heard God correctly.
Even though I know I heard the Lord, there still have been moments of doubting coming from the enemy. I love mentoring ladies who are on a similar journey as myself and I would be honored to mentor you too! Whether you desire to start your own ministry, desire to start your own podcast, or need help writing a book, please reach out to me via email or check out my website to learn more about my ministry! There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three important qualities you need to have as a small business owner are sticktoitiveness, adaptability, and being a life-long learner.
You need to have sticktoitiveness, meaning you must have determination to finish the job you started. There will be many, many hard days as a small business owner where you will feel like giving up. When you feel like giving up, get up and go for a walk or a drive, a fresh perspective always helps reset your disappointment. Also, have a list posted of all the wins you have accomplished. Read your list when you are down, this will bring a smile to your face! Remember, don’t give up on the dream God placed in your heart!
Be adaptable! Owning your own business means you need to be adaptable, usually daily! Two of the many ways you need to be adaptable include: technology which is constantly rapidly changing, and consumer preferences, which change often especially related to social media. Remember, what worked last year or last month, may not work today. Keep adjusting your goals and tactics as needed.
Be a life-long learner! I have jokingly told many people, the first year as a new faith-based business owner, I felt like I learned one new software program a week! Being a self-published author and podcaster, there are a lot of programs to learn on top of the day-to-day business software programs. I am glad I love to learn! I have watched hours of YouTube videos on how to use these systems and I have reached out to others in the business to ask for HELP! Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

I have worked in corporate America as a manager for most of my 25+ year career. I have seen and worked with the HR trend of focusing on one to two areas that are your weakest in. I personally have had great frustration with this trend and my employees also would be greatly frustrated and disheartened every year. I have learned through trial on error and also saw in my last few years in corporate America, that working on strengths improves your output and morality better!
God gave each of us gifts. I encourage people to work to grow their gifts! Of course, there will be things you have to do as a business owner that you won’t like but overall to succeed, growing the gifts God gave you will help you achieve your goals faster and, in the process, make you happier!
