We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jack Lutz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jack, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
This question is so funny because I actually get it from an entirely unrelated place. I actually get it from my middle school and high school days of running cross country. I ran for one of the best teams in the state, and from middle school my coach made me understand the importance of work ethic. A day not training and progressing forward, is a day wasted. I soon applied that concept to my own music and guitar playing, and still to this day follow those words.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello! I am Jack Lutz! I am a 21-year-old indie pop musician from Columbus, Ohio inspired by the vintage sights and sounds of Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Stray Cats, and Stephen Sanchez with more modern inspirations such as Joshua Bassett, Justin Timberlake, Jonas Brothers, and John Mayer. I currently have 7 singles out with an EP coming out on August 23rd. In addition to my music catalog, I frequently play live shows in the Columbus and Cleveland areas and have even had the great honor of opening for national acts such as Wheatus, 24kGoldn, and Lee DeWyze (American Idol Winner). Outside of my music project, I am a rising senior at Baldwin Wallace University majoring in Music Industry (Music Business).
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Making connections in your local music scene – when trying to start a music project one of the most important things to do is meet other local musicians and be supportive of them, and they’ll be supportive of you. Some of my best friends are fellow musicians I met playing simple open mics or just happened to be put on a concert bill with. They will look out for you and you will look out for them!
2) The music itself is only one piece of the puzzle when being a musician – when trying to promote your music project also be sure to emphasize the small things like a logo, a nice website, professionally taken pictures from your live shows, etc. these will be the immediate things a person will look at online when they stumble across your profile. If it’s eye-catching, they’ll most likely check out your music.
3) Have fun and let that show – at the end of day music is supposed to be fun and make sure you show that at all times. Sure, you could be under a lot of stress leading up to a big show, recording sesh, etc. but always make sure you come back to the fact that you are doing all of this because it is something you are passionate about and enjoy.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I am truly so blessed to have the parents I have. They started me in guitar lessons when I was in first grade, and pushed me to go after my musical dreams ever since. From helping me pay for new equipment, to showing up to almost all my shows no matter how far, to just being a constant source of positive energy towards my musical endeavors, I am truly so thankful.
