Meet Chris Janssen

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chris Janssen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Chris, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

When I was in school to become a life coach, we did peer coaching to practice our new skills. I was nervous. My program was specific to those of us who had already completed a graduate degree in psychology, so I was in classes with counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The PhD’s in the classes especially intimidated me.

The more I focused on how to get the client their outcome, the more rattled my nerves got. I was focusing on using the learned coaching techniques to get client outcomes. I was focused on my own ability.

I knew that we get what we focus on, desired or undesired. So I applied this to the imposter syndrome I was experiencing. The moment I stopped focusing on my ability and began focusing on the client, the nerves calmed and I was in my coaching zone.

I added a coaching mantra to my professional routine. It goes like this: “I focus on my client’s outcome. Not my ability to get my client their outcome.”

Focusing on who I am meant to serve, gets me to lead from my heart instead of my head. When your mission is clear, fear will disappear.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Learning how to rewrite life narratives. While we cannot control all circumstances, we can control the meanings we attach to them. I developed a coaching tool to help clients with this and it is included in both of my books.

2. Learning that feelings are just action signals. They are not wrong. We can stop, celebrate our awareness, then get curious instead of confused about the feeling. My framework, called the Four F’s, is included in both of my books and leads others through how to navigate confusing feelings.

3. My latest book is about sobriety and shares my own journey with recovery from alcohol addiction. The main lesson I learned and share most recently is how to take the shame off harmful habits or addictions in order to move out of the problem and into the solution. Once I learned that it was not my fault and I am not a monster for getting tripped up, I was energized to get sober within a supportive community.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am looking for stages, interviews, and podcast hosts to have conversations with. As I guest I’d love to contribute what my upcoming book is about and spread the word about my mission and message through it.
