Meet Sandra Felemovicius

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sandra Felemovicius. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Sandra, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

Born in Mexico City, I carry the rich colors and traditions of my heritage with me everywhere I go. Minneapolis has been my home for 32+ years, and I love bringing that energy to homes and business spaces here in Twin Cities and nationwide through my art. I strive to evoke a reaction through my painting, and it is this conversation between artist and viewer that has always fascinated me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Sandra pulls from her Mexican culture and the outer tangible world to create her abstractions. Her work is non-objective which consists of arrangements of line and mark making that make no direct reference to anything in the visible world’s exterior or physical. She uses line, pattern and texture to speak metaphorically and poetically of things that are formless, intangible and unseen. Her process of creating a painting is rooted in who she is, a Jewish Mexican American Artist, integrating her past with the present cultures. Her painting is a dance between the canvas and her body. Using her gut at the start of the painting and finishing it with a combination of intellect and design. She builds her surfaces using mixed media with multiple layers, resulting in a combination of light, color, forms, rhythm and shapes that creates a comforting balanced composition.
“Tap into Your Creativity” is a program Sandra created during Covid that has been running more than 3 ½ years featuring a group of artists in live interviews on Instagram from all over the world that came together to support Feeding America.. By donating and then selling their pieces of art, Sandra together with her “army of artists” were able to raise over $35,000 dollars for Feeding America, which amounts to more than 350,000 meals for those in need.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey as a Mexican-inspired painter, three qualities that have profoundly impacted my work are a deep connection to cultural roots, an unyielding commitment to nature, and a mastery of color. My connection to Mexican culture, with its rich history, vibrant traditions, and deep spiritual significance, has been the foundation of my artistic expression. Mastering color, particularly the bold and evocative hues that are so characteristic of Mexican art, has enabled me to create work that is both visually striking and emotionally impactful.

For those early in their journey, I would advise immersing yourself in the culture and stories that move you; let them inform and inspire your work. Hone your ability to tell stories through your art—whether it’s through symbolism, composition, or the subjects you choose. And finally, dedicate yourself to studying and experimenting with color; understand its emotional power and learn how to use it to convey the deepest aspects of your vision.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My parents have been the most instrumental figures in helping me overcome challenges and develop the essential skills and qualities needed for success. Their unwavering support and belief in my potential provided a foundation of confidence and resilience. From a young age, they nurtured my creative spirit, encouraging me to explore and express myself through art. They instilled in me a deep respect for our cultural heritage, teaching me the importance of staying connected to my roots, which has profoundly influenced my work. Their wisdom and guidance were invaluable as I navigated the complexities of the artistic journey, always reminding me of the power of perseverance and the importance of staying true to my vision. Through their love, they equipped me with the tools I needed to grow not just as an artist, but as a person, shaping the essence of who I am today.
